A Couple of Things…

Jeez it’s been awhile since I last wrote anything. I’ve missed you!

1. Mother’s day this year was nice enough.  I had breakfast with the Mimiagas, shot hoops for an hour, then had dinner with my Dad and Carol down in the Harbor. Of course I had the obligatory phone call from Sydney Rose, but it was short because not much new had happened since she had called earlier in the week on Mexican Mother’s day (I had texted her to alert her to that fact and to remind her that I am in fact half Mexican).

2. Father’s day was short and sweet taking pops to Casa de Soria for dinner. This photo represents me being Daddy’s little “angel” with my favorite doll I took everywhere with me.  If you’re old enough, then you just might remember who Emmet Kelly was.

3. OH!  In between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, I took a mini vacation to Portland to visit my Sydney Rose and we had a blast visiting Sydney’s favorite places to hang and I got to meet so many of her friends (who all told me great job on raising my daughter). I rented a VRBO where Sydney stayed with me during my visit. We took in a couple of movies including “Wonder Woman” which we both absolutely loved!!!  I found Portland’s rapid transit to be pretty amazing.  You can take the MAX (light rail service) right outside the Portland airport directly to downtown for only $2.50, or you can get an all day pass for $5.  That includes their buses as well. They also have a huge bike riding community and bikes you can rent all over the city.

4.  It’s time to confront the fact that I no longer wear a size 2 let alone a 0.  It’s sort of a weird strange dream that I use to be that skinny and it was just one year ago! The last time I weighed 114 pounds  was when I wore a training bra. And while I am confronting this fact, and I’m happy I feel healthier and look healthier, I still find it so hard to part ways with these skinny pants. the stupid thing is that I wasn’t trying to lose weight (it was a side effect of my knee surgery), so it wasn’t much of an accomplishment anyway!
Side note:  I gave Sydney a few pairs and they fit her so their staying in the family at least.

5.  Variety is the spice of life I guess when it comes to the new line of Ken dolls from Mattel. You can choose Kens from different ethnic backgrounds to dolls with dad-bods and man buns.

6. So I’m back on the radio! CAPS Media cancelled my Ventura Rocks cable show last summer as it was too costly to produce (it took seven staff to pull off a half hour program); but they told me they had a radio station in the works.  Well they went live on air in February and I’ve been hosting a weekly radio show highlight local musicians.  I’m going to be calling it the Pam Baumgardner Music Hour where I play mostly local music, but a few indie artists are thrown in and every now and then along with a national act who has actually played in Ventura before.  It’s been a blast but it takes four to five hours to produce.  At least it’s only my time and the CAPS Media staff’s time.

7. And speaking of being back on the air, it’s the first time I’ve used my legal name since college.  I’ve always gone by Stephanie Rose as a professional broadcaster. It was weird getting use to saying Pam Baumgardner.

8. The day after I don’t buy a lottery ticket, I always think the winner owes me, because had I bought a ticket, he would not have won.

9. Some people assumed the reason why men cheat on their wives is because they were bored, but according to Superdrug’s Online Doctor, the most common reason why men are unfaithful is because the other person was just really hot.
I say, give me a freakin’ break!  The reason he cheats is because he has no self control.

10.  And speaking of bad men bored of their wives, or worse, can’t stand their wives, do you remember the story of the man who robbed a bank and deliberately got caught so he could get away from his wife?  Well according to the Associated Press (via MSN.com) June 14, 2017, his sentence was home confinement.  Now that’s just brilliant Karma.

Thanks for listening!

A Couple of Things…

MotleyCrew1.  The Transportation Department tries to take a field trip at least once a year.  This year we opted to ride our bikes from Ventura City Hall to Santa Barbara, a little over 30 miles. We got to check out the new bike path along La Conchita, as well as checking out future bike path plans for Carpinteria.

Our ultimate destination?  Union Ale House on State Street across from the train station. After lunch, we hopped on the Amtrak back to Ventura.  No mishaps.  No accidents.  We kept a steady pace with perfect weather and the promise of beers ahead.

finger-dog2.  Well my love of the hot dog has officially come to an end.  Do you blame me?

A Facebook post claimed they went to Cupids hot dogs by Northridge college and it looked like this.  Who could eat a chili dog that looks like spaghetti sauce?  All kidding aside,  that looks like a freakin’ finger. EWWWWW!

3.  A survey taken recently of what moms don’t want for Mother’s Days:
Gym membership
Perfume
Jewelery

Really?  I’d love to have my gym membership paid for, I’d love a small bottle of Chanel No. 5, but jewelry?  Not so much; I’m low maintenance when it comes to jewelry.  I wear small dangling earrings, and not much else; and I’m not a huge fan of diamonds because I think they’re overrated.  All that being said, Bloomingdales sells an ounce of Chanel for $325.00.  If you know me, I get a tad offended when people overdo it on their cologne; but strategically placed minimal taps of No 5, yes please.

Of course I would never expect my daughter to be so extravagant.  But to everyone else, my birthday is coming up (hint hint).

batman-vs-superman4.  I went to the movies and while watching the upcoming attractions, I saw a preview for the movie “Superman vs Batman”.  Am I the only one confused here?  Aren’t they both superheros?

5.  MSN Medical news headline:  “Frequent Orgasms May Protect Against Certain Cancers.”  Sorry girls, unfortunately this applies only to men.

6.  I may be alone on this, but I already missed David Letterman, that is, the early days of Dave pre-1999.

lunch7.  Sheldon Brown, publisher of the Ventura Breeze held a Writers/Photographer’s luncheon recently.  Coming from an architect background, he decided to launch a newspaper eight years ago.  He said he had no idea what he was doing, and pretty much still doesn’t.  He’s a dear friend and I admire his tenacity. I’m proud to be a contributing writer for him.

8.  I’d been in the thick of HTML5 and writing code for the current website I’ve been working on for the past month when I hit an impasse. I could not for the life of me figure out how to make the page layout the way I wanted it to.  I googled it, I looked to the Worldwide Web Consortium specs, I search different tutorials to no avail.  Then while driving last weekend, the solution hit me like a ton of bricks.  It was like magic and it worked like a charm!

9.  For the first time in seven years I have seriously considered pulling the plug on VenturaRocks.com.  There is much to mull over.

10.  From my favorite quotes file, “Life is like a ten speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use.” – Charles M. Schulz

Thanks for your time.

A Couple of Things…

Goofy GirlsLove her laugh!1.  Some mothers want time with their families on Mother’s Day, yet others want time off from their families on Mother’s day.

Me?  Just knowing my baby loves me and is thinking of me is all I really need.  It has to be, since she is over 900 miles away.

2.  I mentioned in my last post that I would have another baby in a heartbeat.  The other night I had a dream that I did.  I felt a contraction, and then I felt something (you know, “down there”), and I pushed it out, and there was a baby!  The great thing is that while the contraction hurt (in my dream), the baby the size of a watermelon coming out a hole the size of a lemon, did not hurt.

I love my dreams.

John & Kirstie2a.  In case you’re wondering where that quote orginally came from, it’s from Look Who’s Talking.  Kirstie Alley’s character, Molly actually says, “Why don’t you try squeezing something the size of a watermelon out of an opening the size of a lemon and see how hot YOU look?”  Love that movie!

With Maggie and Jonny3.  Well I did survive Cinco de Mayo.  Shots of tequila were involved, and thanks to Jonny at Amigos, some were free.  They had a gal going around with samples of new “organic” tequila which according to her, doesn’t add sugar to the distilling process.  I asked if a lot of others do, and she conceded that no, in fact they don’t.  But it was a nice selling point.

with Maggie and Kat4.  By the way, Maggie is the Queen of selfies.  This photo of course is not a selfie.  I call it, “the making of a selfie” courtesy of my father.

5.  Some days I learn more than others.

6.  While speaking to a co-worker about my basketball mix tape which has Linkin’ Park, Foo Fighters and Rage Against the Machine on it, I commented that one of these days I’m going to have to grow up.

His reply?  “Why bother?  We all die anyways.”

You are very wise Mr. Towers.

scuba_002scuba_0017.  I learned to scuba dive in a swimming pool.  It felt like I was at the bottom of the ocean…that is until, of course, the following week when I was.  Too cool, and completely exhilarating!!!

KXBS had me certified so I could talk about my experience on air.  I dove off the coast in Malibu, off the Channel Islands and then off the coast in Catalina.

8.  My new favorite video I came across.  The dog is not allowed on the bed, so the owners put up a camera to see what happens while they’re gone. Such joy!!! The cat? Not so much!:

9.  I heard that The Simpsons has been on the air for 24 years?  Crazy!  I’m kind of proud to say I’ve never seen an episode.

sriracha10.  The #2 ingredient in that devilishly delicious Sriracha hot chili sauce is sugar.  It all makes so much sense now.

Mother's Day dinner with Nancy, Dad, Syd Rose, me, and Staci Brown

Mother’s Day dinner with Nancy, Dad
Syd Rose, me, and Staci Brown

1.  Mother’s Day was great fun. Felt the love for sure!

2.  I hate falling for someone’s social veneer.

3.  Alright, I admit it.  I love a man in a uniform!

4.  If a cup of coffee costs $2.00 and the same sized cup of hot chocolate costs $1.50, then how come a cup of half coffee and half hot chocolate cost $2.50?  When a coffeehouse charges me more than $2.00 for the combo, I never return. EVER!!!

5.  VenturaRocks.com is really becoming a mover and a shaker here in Ventura.  Plus I have to admit, I love the hugs I get when I go out.

6.  I’m in the middle of finals.  I have just two this semester.  One down, one to go.  Confidence level remains moderate.

7.  I hate being mean, even when it’s warranted.  But sometimes you have to let the other person know enough is enough.  It still leaves my stomach in knots.

8.  When I was married, Chris and I started what we affectionately called, “The-Kevin-Costner-Movies-That-Matter video collection”.  Really, the only ones that really continue to matter in my book are Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, both about baseball, odd.

9.  I’m now on a quest to spot my first owl in the wild.

10.  I’m not a fan of the accordian.

11.  From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file:  “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!  Hell, who am I kidding? I hope you fall down the fucking stairs too.”  Yeah, it’s been one of those weeks.

Being a Mother

Bonding with Sydney Rose about 2 seconds after she was born.

Bonding with Sydney Rose about 2 seconds after she was born.

Being a mother has been the most important and responsible thing I have done this life time.

As I only managed to get one kid out of my former spouse (a story for another day), I am happy to say that my daughter has exceeded my expectations of motherhood.

It’s an odd thing, the connection between mother and daughter.  As a daughter, and now as a mother.

When I lost my mother at the age of 15, I thought for sure that my life would never be whole again.  But I was wrong.  When my daughter was born, I was at once complete in the universe.  When the nurse placed her on my tummy, and she automatically wrapped her tiny fingers around my forefinger, I knew my life would forever be better because she was in my universe.

I vowed silently, that I would care for this little girl and that I would do my best to make a safe environment for her to grow up in and to thrive in.  I pray to God that I’ve done my best for her.

She has done nothing but made me proud.

The bond I have had with my little girl has enhanced my life and I am a better person because of her.

I love you Sydney Rose!

A Posthumous Happy Mother’s Day

Patty, me in stroller, and my mom

Patty, me in stroller, and my mom

I started to write about my Mother’s life with the title Mother’s Day, and then found that it was really freakin’ depressing.  So I’ve backed up and I’m going to write about my time with my mother.  It may look like it’s going to be sad and depressing too, but hang in there…

I really loved my mother.  I lost her when I was fifteen years old, so my viewpoint back then was much different than it is today.  Teenagers tend to be dramatic, but when I lost her, I thought I really lost my whole world, and I went through many different phases of dealing with her death, a suicide, for the next fifteen or so years.

That being said, today I reflect on my childhood with my mother.  She was the bomb!  The love and comfort she always gave to me was such that I felt truly taken care of and that I was Okay.  You know what I mean?  I never second guessed my worth around her.

My mother loved to laugh.  I always looked forward to her coming home with a certain sparkle in her eye as she would tell me a story about what had happened that day at work.  And I would always asked, “What did you do?” And she would always say, “I just laughed.”  which always made me laugh.

I remember when she worked at Henshaw’s Department store in Whittier that she would bring home a new Barbie outfit almost every single week.  My Barbies were amongst the best dressed in town.  While working there, she worked in gift wrapping (she would bestow her knowledge of these skills to me) and then later in the Hickory Farms department.  We’d get one of those big ol’ giant beef sticks from time to time and she’d bring home a box of these nasty little squares of what I can only describe as congealed fruit with no sugar, and they appeared to be rolled in flour or something.  To a kid, that’s yuck.  As an adult, it’s a treat.  Regardless, it was always fun to run around the department store pretending I lived there.

My mother loved the sun.  She was Swedish, so she was extremely white, but if she put the effort in, she tanned fairly well.  We spent many hours at the beach and poolside as I ran amok while she sunbathed.  Her tanning efforts were usually short-lived however as her tan would dry up and she would soon be peeling.  I use to spend what seemed like hours sitting on her butt while peeling these long strands of dead skin off her back.  It was awesome!!

I remember I was the one who gave my mother the Mumps, just in time for Christmas one year.  I always felt bad about that.

My mother’s cooking skills were superb to someone who does not know any better.   Ninety percent of my vegetables came from a can.  She tended to overcook things, but to this day, I love the end-cut of roasts, the drier the better.  I’m sorry to say the day she attempted to make Chili Rellano, I may have thrown them up, which is probably why I can not stand any sort of crustiness when it comes to my eggs today.  She did however make amazing lemon meringue pies, and cheese enchiladas.

It was shortly after she passed away and my father came to live with me that I realized my mother never taught me how to cook.  She had not bestowed her knowledge of these skills to me which may or may not have been a good thing, but it created a bit of a problem.  That first Christmas without her was already incredibly hard, but we had to eat, right?  But without “said skills” our dinner options were limited.  After a short discussion, it was decided that I would attempt to recreate what I hope I remembered seeing when I would watch her make those cheese enchiladas.  Nailed it!!!  That’s one thing I took from her for sure and it made it a tad bit comforting as we ate enchiladas for Christmas dinner that year.

My mother LOVED to play cards.  We would literally spend hours playing Gin, Rummy, Crazy Eights or War.  She never tired of it!

My mother refused to drive the freeway.  Do you have any idea how long it takes to get home from Los Angeles via ALL side streets?  She was a bit nuts, but she let me take control of the radio.

My mother riding a bicycle was funny shit.

Every now and then my mother would roll up the sleeves and would dive into my room only to resurface when it was nice and clean.  She did this at least three times.  That was awesome!

My mother loved Credence Clearwater Revival.  I still don’t get it.   She also use to sing Benny and the Jets to her dog Benny which always got the dog hollering with her.  Drove me crazy!!

It took me almost five years to not look at the clock at 4 o’clock waiting for her call to check in with me before she got off work at 5 o’clock.  It took me almost ten years to stop looking for her face in a crowd. And to this day I still ache for her touch.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom.

A Couple of Things…

Last year’s Bike-to-Work day

1.  Bike-to-Work week starts Monday!!!

2.  Is saving $20 worth it for a used wet suit, knowing someone most likely has peed in it? The gal at Play it Again Sports said, “Well you can wash it!”

3.  Mother’s Day has always been a tad bittersweet for me because I miss my mother so much, on the other hand as a Mother I get to celebrate being Sydney Rose’s mom, which has been the greatest adventure of my life.

4.  I absolutely love the sound of a basketball swishing through a metal net. Especially those 3-pointers!

5.  I wrote a blog for VenturaRocks.com on The Worth of an Artist and was promptly attacked for supporting RAW which does in fact require their Artists to sell tickets to their events. I’m going on the record as saying that RAW actually offers a great service when done correctly to all artists. And I’ve heard nothing but great things about our Ventura chapter. That being said, I’ve asked Sara from RAW to remove VenturaRocks.com from their posters because technically it is Pay-to-Play. We’re still listing RAW, just not a sponsor now.

6. The other morning at work as I was trying to wrap my mind around why Sergio Albarran listens to Hall and Oates all the time, I asked him how old he was and he said 27. It just doesn’t make sense! And then he said and I quote, “Hall and Oates are gangster.” Life is a mystery. Some things are just not meant to be understood.

7.  Just learned that Hall and Oates are playing the Ventura Fair this year.

8.  I found an old aircheck from when I worked weekends on B95.1. No comment.

9.  All spiders are Brown Recluses to me

10.  I’m not a big fan of Westerns, western music or rodeos. But man, certain cowboys make me swoon!

11.  From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file:  “When one door closes, another one opens. Or you could just open the closed door, that’s how they work.”

Thanks for listening.
