Ventura Music Week 2014 Wrap Up

drumkitThis was the fourth year for Ventura Music Week, my second year helping. Even though last year was so much work, I was still surprised at how exhausting it is to pull this event off.

Of course each year the goal is to surpass the previous one, and I believe we did that. We generated more interest in our music scene, further marketing this city as a music destination. Of course you’ll always have Monday Morning Quarterbacks. To them I say, “Shut up unless you want to help make it better.”

Again, this VMW team is on a volunteer basis. Some of the team members are on a payroll for their perspective jobs such as Economic Development crew, Peter Brown and Lilly Rudolph, from the City of Ventura; Kevin Clerici and Meredith Hart from the DVO (Downtown Ventura Organization), David Comden from the VC Reporter; but Kat Merrick, Sam Benner and myself don’t work for companies that cover their time spent on this.

Kat Merrick owns Totally Local VC and is also hired by different companies to help on their event planning; Sam Benner has moved away from marketing and has started working in real estate; and while I work for the City of Ventura, what I do to help is completely separate. I take personal time off for meetings, and I use my vacation time during Ventura Music Week. Many of the salaried helpers went above and beyond their day jobs helping to pull off events and showing up to lend a hand.

Again we had around 6-7 people attending meetings and making decisions on the direction we wanted to go. We really did want to start earlier on the planning stages, but somehow we managed to work on rushed deadlines which added stress to the equation.

That being said, last year there were clearly only a few people working their asses off, this year, more of us were. I’m so grateful to Kevin Clerici and Meredith Hart of the DVO (Downtown Ventura Organization), for their support. Yes, they have a vested interest in seeing their section of town (DOWNTOWN), thrive, but they took control of the budget and financial aspects, rallied their workers on physical help, and ran so many errands contributing to the success of the week.

As a committee we also put on a handful of events including the launch party, a movie screening, a visual arts presentation of rock photographers and a wrap party.  Some were more successful than others, but again, “movie night” was one of the highlights for the week with a screening of the Academy Award winning documentary, “20 Feet From Stardom.”

All participating venues are responsible for their own entertainment. We just ask that they try not to hire bands/artists who are already scheduled during the week so we have lots of diversity.

Again this year we scheduled VMW so that the anchor event for the second weekend would be Roadshow Revival (RSR). We lost however Rock Picnic. No one could blame Brian Parra for throwing in the towel on this one, but I was sad none-the-less as this had been the anchor even for the first weekend. Taking its place were two solid events, the SRO Benefit (which just happened to fall during VMW), and the Global Guitar Greats Tour held at the W Gallery.

But as great as RSR is, we really don’t want this event to fall during graduations and Father’s Day. People have other things to take care of!  We’re hoping next year that RSR can be moved to an earlier weekend, or we’ll find another hot event to take its place.

Even before our first official meeting, there was some heartbreak for me personally as I worked with a national touring act who has members who live here in Ventura. I went back and forth with one of the members of the band and their management trying to work on having this band launch the week with a show at the Ventura Theater. It would have been AWESOME!! But even after we met their monetary demands, management passed.  I tried not to take it personally, but I truly believe, if anything business should be personal, and this left me heartbroken.

So with some air deflated early on, we still managed to increase participation up to 50 venues from 30 last year.

While Sam sets up the website, I once again took on the responsibility of entering in all the content.  That’s FIFTY venues, with their specific information, and then their entertainment line up.  Some changed, some came in at the last moment.  I’ll be honest, I spent over 80 hours on the website and Facebook setting up information, 40 before VMW even started, and 40 while it was going on.  I was up by 6 in the morning, I had to enter changes during the day, create downloadable PDFs of the schedule and update with some photos late at night.

We only had two people going out to as many venues as we could, checking in with social media, then posting photos to add to the excitement.  Even with only two people, social media was abuzz with all the events.  The wrap party at Discovery was super fun with some of Ventura’s top guitarists jamming including Tommy Marsh, Erik Lemaire, Guy Martin, Alastair Greene and Mark Masson.

It took several weeks for my head to stop spinning.  I had taken personal vacation time, but returning to work the next day felt more like vacation as I could slow down and focus on one task at a time.

It’s been over month and I’ve started asking for feedback from the venues on what they thought, and whether they thought it was worth their time.  None of the responses have surprised me.  Some can’t think out of the box and only think in terms of how it benefits them personally, but most do look at the bigger picture and know that this effort benefits our town and as a result, it trickles down to them with more people coming to Ventura to hear music.  But the responses I loved the best, were those who had ideas of how to better this event next year.

We’re gathering theses ideas, there will be changes, and we may lose some help from some of the entities, but we will certainly gain help from other sources. Ventura’s music scene is gaining more momentum and catching attention from neighboring counties.  We are putting us on the map and this is all worthy of our time…even worthy of our blood sweat and tears.

A Couple of Things…

1. The Ventura Fair is in full swing!   The theme is Boots, Barns & Banjos.  It was so much fun walking the parade route last Saturday with Kat and Totally Local VC.   The float provided live music from Dan Grimm on guitar & Ian McFadyen on banjo and Jonny Reese of Amigos on air guitar.  Photo above has Mary McGrath who represented locally grown pumpkins, Kat Merrick of Totally Local VC and myself supporting local music.   The float took first place!!!

2. The second photo is courtesy of my friend, photographer Amanda Peacock.  When I saw this when she posted it on Facebook I laughed because I had no idea she was shooting me.  Then my second thought was, “What happened to my ass?!!!” Seriously!  I use to have one!

3. My birthday, by the way (thanks for asking!), was amazing!!  Went to the Getty Museum with Sydney, band practice with Christine & Charles Law, then drinks with the Laws, Eve, Kat & Chris, then a delicious dinner with the family, Staci and the Mimiagas at Aloha.  My birth week started with dancing to Rey Fresco the weekend before with Maggie at Bombay’s and ended the following Friday with Linda (my oldest & dearest friend) for great music from Shawn Jones at Peirano’s.
Dancing, amazing music, delicious food, the best friends and family.  Life is good!!!

4. I’ll be reviewing the no gift birthday policy with Kat.  (See last blog)

5. Oh!  I learned “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by the Eurythmics at band practice on my birthday, the Marilyn Manson version that is.  But it sounds more like the White Stripes doing Marilyn Manson.

6. Double Oh!  Thought of another life hightlight:
Interviewing Neil Patrick Harris while he was taking flying trapeze lessons in the Valley, then at the end, he surprises me with a free try.  I can still recall the adrenalin rush with safety harness on, standing on tippy toes grasping the bar, and then taking a deep breath and swinging out.    SOOOO SCARY!!!   I was high for days!

7. Soon after I wrote that list last week of some of the highlights in my life I saw this and smiled.  This is why I wrote it’s the PG-13 version:  “Some of the best moments in life are the ones you can’t tell anyone about.”

8. I wonder, “Is it better to have the last laugh or to just take the freakin’ high road?”

9. I recently took a break at work and walked downtown to a local bakery where I not only knew 7 out 9 people there, but one of them was the mayor of Ventura himself! Love this town!!

10. I had my co-workers over for a beach day recently.  One of us was brave enough to jump in the cold water.  The rest of us…not so much.    I need to toughen up if I’m going to learn how to surf!

11. Congratulations to my old friend and radio colleague, John Vance, who recently accepted the Fire Chief’s position in Minnetonka, Minnesota.  He’s relocating his family from Granger, Indiana.  Best wishes Chief!!   Of course this means he’s only 1900 miles away as opposed to 2100 miles!

A Couple of Things…

I blame my parents for this fashion statement.

I blame my parents for this fashion statement.

1. Strep Throat sucks.  I don’t recommend it.

2.  Feeling better now and back to living a productive life!  But not well enough to shoot hoops yet.

3. I have another birthday coming up this month.  I haven’t figured out how to make that stop yet.

4. I’ve never been into Astrology, but the fact that I’m a Leo makes so much sense.

5. Just so you know, if it doesn’t get any better than this, I’ll die a happy camper!

6. I was thinking about what are my most treasured possessions? Of course I first think of people or animals, but they aren’t really possessions.  They hang out because they don’t know any better.

7. So what about physical possessions?  My Ibanez guitar, Spalding women’s basketball,  loaded mp3 player, camera.  Luckily all things I could grab all at once in case of fire.   My photos are uploaded in cyperspace.  I don’t really watch TV.  I can’t carry out my furniture.  I don’t really wear jewlery.  So yeah, I’m prepared.   If I’m not home, all these things are replaceable.

8. I find that more times than not, when a person is explaining something and then they say, “To make a long story short…” It’s already too late.

9. It took some time, but Sydney Rose succumbed not too long ago to Facebook, and I was happily surprised when I received a Friend Request from her.

10. I keep seeing posts about privacy concerns on Facebook and people trying to “declare their rights to intellectual property…” blah blah blah.  My thought on the matter, get off Facebook if you are concerned about what you post.  Seriously, it probably isn’t for you!  It’s SOCIAL MEDIA!  Facebook makes the rules clear as a bell when you sign up.  Sorry Charlie!

11. Speaking of which, I do a lot of Facebook posting for VenturaRocks.com.  What I don’t understand is why people don’t message you with a correction, rather than posting a derogatory comment for all to see about what is wrong.

12. A month an a half after Ventura Music Week and I think…yes, I think I’ve collected the last check and it looks like we made enough to cover all our bills.  YES!!!

13.  From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file:  “I’ve learned that making a ‘living’ is not the same thing as making a ‘life’.”  Maya Angelou     WORD

Thanks for listening!

A Couple of Things…

1.  I love saying, “I’m going to band practice.”  Or, “I’m coming back from band practice.” Or “I just left band practice.”  Or “Band practice was a lot of fun.”  I’m driving Sydney Rose crazy!!

2.  I LOVE BAND PRACTICE!!!  Just saying.

3.  Fortunately, I can only get better on the guitar!

4.  And I thought my wrists were sore from shooting hoops!  I had no idea!!  Standing up playing guitar is a whole different ballgame.

5.  We did a punk version of one of Charles Law’s original country rock songs. We fuckin’ rocked it!!

6.  I imagine I’m a cross between Courtney Love and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

7.  There is no reality in the previous statement.

8.  Someone mentioned recently that life gets better after a certain age.  I have to say that life gets better when you decide to finally chase down your dreams.  You can do this anytime.  Start!!

9.  Next up, surfing!

10.  Speaking of surfing…Surf Rodeo was this weekend.  We had a blast!  Sold all kinds of VenturaRocks.com t-shirts.  Two days of fun at Pierpont Beach with music and surf, Ventura is definitely my kind of town!

11.  The fact that I lost my hat, camera, and purse on three separate occasions during the two days of Surf Rodeo, and I managed to find all three in tact (eventually), only goes to prove how much Ventura Rocks!

12.  From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file: A friend recently posted a quote, but the author was listed as Unknown. It’s a worthy quote and I found the author:

“Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself” – George Bernard Shaw.   I agree, “WORD!”

Ventura Music Week 2013 Wrap Up

Ventura Music Week kick off party

Ventura Music Week kick off party

Ventura Music Week (VMW) was put on haphazardly by the City of Ventura the past couple of years.   That’s not a derogatory comment about the City, but rather, a statement of fact.  It wasn’t done properly because they didn’t have a staff and resources backing it up.  They had one individual trying to spearhead it.  Very little support was given.  It was hard work and the end result didn’t get anyone looking forward to the following year.  Eric, our hats go off to you for your efforts.  Eric has since left the City and we miss him dearly.

This year, Peter Brown in Economic Development put out feelers to see if community members would want to take over .  So Kevin Clerici of Downtown Ventura Organization, Kat Merrick of Totally Local VC, David Comden of the VC Reporter came together to see if they could pull it off as a group under the limited guidance and small funding by the City.  Sam Benner of Benner Marketing was invited as his expertise in website design would be valuable, and Gary Stewart of Four Brix Winery had a graphic design background plus he could rally some of the wineries to participate.  I was the last to be invited to the table as a representative of VenturaRocks.com.

There were seven of us working to pull of Ventura Music Week 2013.  No one was being paid.  This was solely a volunteer effort to see this through.

There were a number of meetings before I came on board and there were a number of decisions made that I was not a part of including changing the dates so that VMW aligned with Cash Fest (Roadshow Revival a Tribute to the Music of Johnny Cash).  Another decision made was having highlighted events listed on posters.

The changing of the dates affected few, but those it did, it was a very big deal.  VC Buzz had scheduled (actually rescheduled) their Ventura County Music Awards to align with VMW.  I’m sure they were counting on the momentum of VMW to generate additional interest in their event.  That was unfortunate, but I believe it was done with all the best intentions for VMW itself so there was a major anchor event (Cash Fest).

As for the highlighted events listed on posters, again I believe it was done with the best of intentions so that the venues would work hard on getting extraordinary talent for at least one of the evenings.  If they didn’t, then it would be like any other week in Ventura (which is pretty awesome).   So the group was hoping to inspire highlighted events which would be rewarded with placement on posters and on the VMW website.  The problem?  Venues don’t want to inspire their patrons to go to someone else’s event!    So many of the venues not only didn’t place the posters on their windows, but they verbally complained, and one of them originally refused to pay the agreed fee of $100 to participate.

I still believe the highlighted events is a great idea, but separate posters need to be designed for venues.  Venue posters should state how they are an official VMW venue, and generic info on VMW itself.  Highlighted event posters should be distributed throughout the Ventura county, Santa Barbara county, the Valley and the City of Los Angeles.   They need to what we have to offer so they would want to come to Ventura to hear our music and support VMW.

So you live and learn.

Also, the work load was not distributed evenly.  After the intitial first few meetings, there was never another meeting where all parties participated.  I would say that Kat pulled off at least 50% of the work, I did at least 30, maybe more and the rest was distributed by the remaining members.

Yes Sam created the website from a WordPress template.  And yes Gary created amazing artwork for us and did all the promo for us. David arranged for all the media buys and Kevin helped with Treasury functions and some networking.

But the majority of the work fell on Kat’s shoulders.

My 30-35% including uploading venue information for the VMW weeksite and Facebook page, running around trying to sign up the venues, distributing products to the venues, party set up and tear down, running errands, and then showing up each and every night during the ten nights where I took pictures, and uploaded them at the end of the night, sometimes after 1:00 in the morning.    VMW Facebook page was posted to dozens of times during every day with the events for all the venues, plus a calendar listing for that day.  These I shared on our VenturaRocks.com FB page as well.

The uploading of venue information sounds easily enough, but there were photos to hunt down, upload resize, create posters for, and post for each event for each venue.  We had 100 bands.  30 venues.  10 tens.  1 city.    There was a lot to process just for the web presence.  Plus there were always changes to schedules, and venues were not always available to answer questions or help with the data.  They are busy too after all trying to make a living!

And again, keep in mind, as much work as I personally put into VMW, Kat did even more running around having meetings and getting this thing done.  Crazy, no?

Trying to get venues to sign up was a real interesting exercise.  As VenturaRocks.com, I haven’t had to really work with the venues.  We just helped them (whether they liked it or not.  The Golden China wasn’t even aware of us…Really?  After 4 years guys?).  But now with VMW, we were asking them to participate and to pay $100 to become an official venue.  It wasn’t pretty for some.  There were a few that didn’t participate and it blew my mind!  One of them didn’t pay and the DVO stepped up to grant the money for them…and still they ended up calling it MY VENUE Music Week instead of Ventura Music Week on their personal promo.

And then there were certain musicians who didn’t make it easy on me as well.  They weren’t happy with a photograph, or I had to get their authorization to help promote their gigs.  OUT-FUCKIN’-LANDISH, no?

So I learned that some personalities make doing such an event more of a challenge.  For me, the bottom line is to help make this City prosperous for all.  To make Ventura known as a music destination where people come and spend money in our venues supporting music and our artists and musicians.

For some of the venues, they got it.  For others, they had tunnel vision and it was not about the group effort for our town, but about what was in it for them.    If the town wins and we pull this off, then they win.

We kicked off VMW with an official party at the W Gallery at the corner of California and Main in downtown Ventura.  The VIP portion of the evening saw venue owners, some musicians, key players and councilman Carl Morehouse as well as Mayor Mike Tracy in attendance.  The musicians who played were amazing.  Dan Grimm kicked off the night, then Spencer the Gardener, old school favorites Raging Arb and the Redheads, then the McEuen Brothers.  It was a success and we have the pictures to prove it!

For ten nights we helped to promote Venture Music Week.  Some of the highlights included a screening of Dave Grohl’s film, Sound City: Real to Reel, a visional arts exhibit at the Museusm of Ventura County, a full day all ages concert at Plaza Park called Rock Picnic which included sets by 8Stops7, Army of Freshmen and Rubberneck Lions.  Zoey’s pulled out the stops by having shows which included a show with surfer turned recording artist, Timmy Curran.

It was a great 10 days.  We pulled it off!!!

After all was said and done, I sat down in Peter Brown’s office at City Hall for a short debriefing.  I was tired to be sure, but satisfied until he asked me, “What’s in it for you?”

Stumped, I asked myself, “Jesus,  can’t I just help?”

But now I’ve had time to think about it, and how much work was involved, and how I took seven of my own vacation days to devote to VMW, and how I used my own resources and how I wasn’t able to generate income during those days doing my own website work.  And I have to re-evaluate, “What is in it for me?”

Next year we want to bump this up ten-fold.  We’re going to start working on it 10 months in advance getting sponsorships lined up.  We want to shut down Main Street and have a free concert with a national touring act to kick off the week.  It’s going to be amazing!

But at what personal cost?  How much am I willing to invest in this town for nothing in return?

It’s something I’m going to try not to dwell on as we gear up for 2014.

A Couple of Things…Ventura Music Week

Kat Merrick, Totally Local VC, David Comden of VC Report & Me.

Kat Merrick of Totally Local VC, David Comden of VC Reporter & Pam Baumgardner of VenturaRocks.com.

1. Ventura Music Week is underway.  I have no idea how we’re pulling it off, but I’m thinking the endless hours of planning and running around rallying the troops might have something to do with it.

2. I love the venues and the people who have stepped up to help with Ventura Music Week.  They get it.  It’s not about what’s in it for them…but about coming together as a community to brand Ventura as a music town.

3. Monday night is a special screening of Dave Grohl’s film, “Sound City, Real to Reel.”  There are obligatory rumors of a special guest showing up…just saying.

4. Our kick off party on Friday was amazing. Music from Dan Grimm, Spencer the Gardener, Raging Arb and the Redheads and the McEuen Brothers all performing in the historic Erle Stanley Gardner Building (known as the birthplace of Perry Mason). Plus we had City Councilmen, Carl Morehouse and Mayor Mike Tracy in attendance.

5. Went to a private Whiskey tasting event Sunday afternoon at The Tavern. I’ll be honest, I was a little scared of overindulging.  Especially having not eaten all day long. Highlight was finally getting to see Rey Fresco perform.

6. I love when I go out to shoot a show that I’m never alone.  I always run into friends to hang out with.

7. One of the perks of Ventura Music Week is establishing new relationships with and getting to know business owners. Most are extremely hard working individuals who deserve help.  Some others…not so much.

8. I am grateful I was wise enough to take vacation time from my day job so I could focus entirely on pulling off Ventura Music Week.  Plus I don’t have to worry about a curfew.

9. 100 bands – 30 venues – 10 days – 1 city.  Yeah, that’s Ventura Music Week baby!

10. Many thanks to Kat Merrick whose drive, expertise and commitment to seeing this through.  Seriously, without her…well  I couldn’t even imagine!

11.  Ventura Music Week was put together by a committee of business owners who donated their time and/or resources:  David Comden, publisher from the VC Reporter, Kevin Clerici of Downtown Ventura, Sam Benner of Benner Marketing, Peter Brown of The City of Ventura, Gary Stewart of Four Brix, Pam Baumgardner (me!) of VenturaRocks.com and of course Kat Merrick from Totally Local VC…thank you for all your hard work.  We did it!!!

A Couple of Things…

Last year’s Bike-to-Work day

1.  Bike-to-Work week starts Monday!!!

2.  Is saving $20 worth it for a used wet suit, knowing someone most likely has peed in it? The gal at Play it Again Sports said, “Well you can wash it!”

3.  Mother’s Day has always been a tad bittersweet for me because I miss my mother so much, on the other hand as a Mother I get to celebrate being Sydney Rose’s mom, which has been the greatest adventure of my life.

4.  I absolutely love the sound of a basketball swishing through a metal net. Especially those 3-pointers!

5.  I wrote a blog for VenturaRocks.com on The Worth of an Artist and was promptly attacked for supporting RAW which does in fact require their Artists to sell tickets to their events. I’m going on the record as saying that RAW actually offers a great service when done correctly to all artists. And I’ve heard nothing but great things about our Ventura chapter. That being said, I’ve asked Sara from RAW to remove VenturaRocks.com from their posters because technically it is Pay-to-Play. We’re still listing RAW, just not a sponsor now.

6. The other morning at work as I was trying to wrap my mind around why Sergio Albarran listens to Hall and Oates all the time, I asked him how old he was and he said 27. It just doesn’t make sense! And then he said and I quote, “Hall and Oates are gangster.” Life is a mystery. Some things are just not meant to be understood.

7.  Just learned that Hall and Oates are playing the Ventura Fair this year.

8.  I found an old aircheck from when I worked weekends on B95.1. No comment.

9.  All spiders are Brown Recluses to me

10.  I’m not a big fan of Westerns, western music or rodeos. But man, certain cowboys make me swoon!

Christine’s Dinner Served by…yes, Firemen

Christine Law

             Christine Law

I’ve known Christine Law since the mid 90s when I worked at KXBS, 96.7 The Bus radio station and she was in the local band Tantrum that we added to our playlist. She stood out because not only was she adorable and had such an easy smile, but she was a female bass player in this heavy rock band.  She rocked that bass!  I was very impressed.

But it was just the last year or so that we started to actually hang out due to the music scene here in Ventura.  She had started up Afirm Records a number of years ago and I started a website called VenturaRocks.com four years ago which supports the music scene here in town. We really do have a lot of common interests, so it’s such a treat when I would get to hang out together.  She attended a “Girls Dress Night Out” as well as Staci Brown’s birthday celebration and I made sure I supported her husband Charles’ band, Charles Law and Jagged, when he played at The Tavern and again at Amigos.

Just a couple of weeks ago I received a special invitation via Facebook from Christine simply entitled: Girls Nite – Dinner at Christine Law’s served by Ventura Firemen!  She said she won a dinner for 8 served by Ventura County Firemen at her house.  But the truth is, she bid on the package which was a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls club.  She’s very much involved in improving conditions in her community and participates in many civic engagement projects.

I have to admit, I was a little giddy about being included for this exclusive gathering of friends.  As it turns out, the women she invited were extraordinary women, more than half I already knew and call my friends and the others I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and hope to see again soon.

Christine and Charles live up above Santa Paula, in the upper Ojai rugged terrain on a ranch style house with horses up against the hills over looking wilderness.  What a beautiful piece of land.  We arrived to find the firetruck parked in her driveway along with the Battalion Chief’s truck next to where the half dozen or so firemen were busy preparing a barbecue dinner for us women.  I didn’t even try to attempt to wipe the smile off my face.

Charles was in charge of the beverages because the rules state our firemen could not drink. Actually, if memory serves, I was informed when we went to have our photo ops that there were two rules for these beautiful heroes, no alcohol, and no nudity.  Again, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face just conjuring up some new images in my mind.

So we had our photos taken after playing on the truck for a while, and the guys were more than gracious and patient about it.  After our group shot and the women were starting to disperse, I half-jokingly mention to the chief that it would be really cool to have a picture with just me and the guys.  He said, “Are you kidding?  Of course!!”  And immediately he rounded up the boys and BAM!  It was a done deal.

We then left the men to go munch on h’orderves which consisted of different cheeses, crackers, bread, dips and fruits, we had plenty of wine, beers and shots of Patron, as we engaged in good conversations enjoying our beautiful surroundings.  Just so you know, while the firemen provided the makings for dinner, we provided the snacks, beverages and dessert. Before we knew it, dinner was ready to be served.  Some of us half expected spaghetti, but our firemen were graciously serving up tri-tip, chicken, veggie kabobs, grilled zucchini and corn on the cob with salad and more fresh fruit and they never allowed us to lift a finger. They served us and treated us like queens.

Our guys cleared the table for us and one of Christine’s guests, Melissa, brought out a bottle of Limoncello, offering up shots to cleanse the palate.  Delicious.  Before long we had our dessert of two types of chocolate cake, I opted for the German chocolate, and I was stuffed…still smiling.

At one point we asked if our firemen were volunteering their time, and we learned that our heros, which included two Battalion Chiefs, were on the clock and always on standby.  If a fire broke out, we were on our own.  Luck was with us as we only lost one fireman who had to respond to a TC (traffic collision).  It was just amazing. They were all true gentlemen.  They served us and took care of us, did not allow us to help clear the table, and when I saw one pass by with an apron wrapped around his waist, I had to follow and what I found brought tears to my eyes:  several of our guys were washing the dishes in uniform. Could there be anything sexier?

Before long it was time to say goodby and give thanks to our firemen for doing this to help raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club.  It was an event I won’t ever forget.

We hung out several hours longer as Christine and Charles opened up their home to us and we talked about my favorite subject of music as we collaborated on how to make the music scene in our town even better.

Before long it was time to say our thanks and goodbyes and with five of us in one car ready to head home I still couldn’t help but smile remembering being treated like a queen for the day and all because Christine Law considers me one of her friends.

Christine, I’m honored.  Thank you!

Looking forward to meeting up on the basketball court one of these days!

A Couple of Things…

Boys playing in the ocean.

1. Saturday in Ventura was picture perfect!  Sunshine, Earth Day celebrations along the promenade at the beach.  Boys playing in the ocean (see photo above), music at the fairgrounds. Marty Party up at the ranch behind Two Trees.  Life is good!

2. Ventura has so much amazing talent. VenturaRocks.com is doing our share of helping to promote this scene.  Now we just need to get more people out supporting it!

3. I saw fireflies in person (in flies?) for the first time in my life five years ago in Louisiana.  They are freakin’ cool.  I thought Disney was pulling my leg on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride all these years.

4. From my “Little Did They Know” file:  I’m a sucker for sardines on saltines with onions.

5. I’ve never had a fast food drive-thru error in my favor.

6. I love music and I love live radio, but I especially love that sense of community when the two come magically together once in a blue moon.  The staff, from the owner to the PD to the on-air crew definitely have to share that vision.  I was lucky to be a part of one once.

7. On the flip-side, I don’t like corporate radio shoving their playlist down your throat.  I don’t like voice tracks. I’ve been unlucky to be a part of one once..for about three months. Sucked the life out of me.

8. WARNING!!!  Flashback moment:   I have to say, I really miss eating Trix and watching Bugs Bunny on Saturday mornings.

A Couple of Things…Boston Marathon Bombing

Ventura, CA Pier

1. When something horrendous and unthinkable occurs and I start to lose my trust in humanity, I know then at that point it more important than ever to find the good in the world and rejoice in that; otherwise the enemy wins.

2. Now let’s get that mofo.

3. I’ve been seeing some of the worst images imagineable from the Boston Marathon bombing, and I’ve been seeing some of the most heroic patriotic images as well.  I’m preserving the latter in my psyche.

4. I’ve always wanted to, and it’s been on my To-Do List, but now more than ever I’m determined to visit Boston.

5. Beware and defeat them:  Fear mongers are everywhere.  And they’re not just the blatant terrorist, but they are the neighbor who points out everything that is bad in their community, yet doesn’t lift a finger to help; they are the media who thrive on bad news and roll that footage over and over again; they are the politician who feeds on citizen fears; they are the friend, co-worker or acquaintance who is forever critical and negative; they are plenty and they are abound.  Do not succumb.  Spot them, then feed them zero energy.

6. Patton Oswalt is one of my new heros.  He wrote this on the very day of the Boston Marathon bombing: https://www.facebook.com/pattonoswalt/posts/10151440800582655

7. Set a good example.  Be the change.  All those small things you do to help?  I notice them.  They make a difference.
