A Couple of Things…

MotleyCrew1.  The Transportation Department tries to take a field trip at least once a year.  This year we opted to ride our bikes from Ventura City Hall to Santa Barbara, a little over 30 miles. We got to check out the new bike path along La Conchita, as well as checking out future bike path plans for Carpinteria.

Our ultimate destination?  Union Ale House on State Street across from the train station. After lunch, we hopped on the Amtrak back to Ventura.  No mishaps.  No accidents.  We kept a steady pace with perfect weather and the promise of beers ahead.

finger-dog2.  Well my love of the hot dog has officially come to an end.  Do you blame me?

A Facebook post claimed they went to Cupids hot dogs by Northridge college and it looked like this.  Who could eat a chili dog that looks like spaghetti sauce?  All kidding aside,  that looks like a freakin’ finger. EWWWWW!

3.  A survey taken recently of what moms don’t want for Mother’s Days:
Gym membership
Perfume
Jewelery

Really?  I’d love to have my gym membership paid for, I’d love a small bottle of Chanel No. 5, but jewelry?  Not so much; I’m low maintenance when it comes to jewelry.  I wear small dangling earrings, and not much else; and I’m not a huge fan of diamonds because I think they’re overrated.  All that being said, Bloomingdales sells an ounce of Chanel for $325.00.  If you know me, I get a tad offended when people overdo it on their cologne; but strategically placed minimal taps of No 5, yes please.

Of course I would never expect my daughter to be so extravagant.  But to everyone else, my birthday is coming up (hint hint).

batman-vs-superman4.  I went to the movies and while watching the upcoming attractions, I saw a preview for the movie “Superman vs Batman”.  Am I the only one confused here?  Aren’t they both superheros?

5.  MSN Medical news headline:  “Frequent Orgasms May Protect Against Certain Cancers.”  Sorry girls, unfortunately this applies only to men.

6.  I may be alone on this, but I already missed David Letterman, that is, the early days of Dave pre-1999.

lunch7.  Sheldon Brown, publisher of the Ventura Breeze held a Writers/Photographer’s luncheon recently.  Coming from an architect background, he decided to launch a newspaper eight years ago.  He said he had no idea what he was doing, and pretty much still doesn’t.  He’s a dear friend and I admire his tenacity. I’m proud to be a contributing writer for him.

8.  I’d been in the thick of HTML5 and writing code for the current website I’ve been working on for the past month when I hit an impasse. I could not for the life of me figure out how to make the page layout the way I wanted it to.  I googled it, I looked to the Worldwide Web Consortium specs, I search different tutorials to no avail.  Then while driving last weekend, the solution hit me like a ton of bricks.  It was like magic and it worked like a charm!

9.  For the first time in seven years I have seriously considered pulling the plug on VenturaRocks.com.  There is much to mull over.

Thanks for your time.

A Couple of Things…

Rob, me, Diego, Tammy1.  These people are trouble, and I couldn’t love them more! It’s always a blast getting together with Tammy and Brother Rob as we catch up with each’s lives, and reminisce about our days at KXBS radio, but add to the mix Diego at Bombay’s and ALL BETS ARE OFF!!!  We survived the night including a late night noshing at Denny’s.

2. Girls toot; they don’t fart, that is unless you can hear it from across the room, then yeah, they fart.

3. I’ve been accused of being stoic twice in my life, and I don’t like it. But I don’t think it necessary to show upset, or that you’ve been hurt. I’d rather ride it out knowing better days are ahead.  But then, that’s just me. I could have tizzy fit melt downs, but trust me, they’re not pretty.

4. Not that I’m a marketing expert or anything, but on my latest batch of VenturaRocks.com t-shirts I went with new colors hoping to not only sell to new customers, but to resell to existing customers.

Who wants one?  No, really???

5. I’m really going to work on waiting until I’m convinced a person has stopped sneezing before I offer a “God bless you.” I figure setting the example will stop what I consider one of the most annoying habits people have:  interrupting a good sneeze sequence.

6. Do you ever go into a movie deciding you will not end up crying though you know it’s a tearjerker? And while you try to fight it, at some point you reconsider and you just give in?  Yeah, me neither.

7. The other night I saw a commercial for cereal.  I don’t even remember what cereal it was, but I was overcome with the sudden desire, nay, overwhelming urgency for milk and processed grained with lots of sugar involved.  Of course, I did not succumb, but if I did, I think I would have gone for Coco Krispies.  It’s probably been 15 years since I’ve had cereal.  So weird.

8. I’ve said it before, and I probably will again, if you’re going to use a quote, give credit where credit is due.

9. A little known fact about my childhood.  I was a Bluebird, the precursor to Camp Fire Girls which was sort of like Girl Scouts, but cooler.  I have no photos to back up this claim to fame, so you’ll have to trust me on this one.  Instead of selling Girl Scout cookies, we sold Camp Fire Girls candy.  Yum!

10. As I’m a big fan of the Grilled Cheese, I found this story in the online version of the LA Times fascinating. They suggest that cheese lovers are more generous and have more sex.
The survey claims they surveyed 4,600 people and found that 73% of grilled cheese lovers have sex at least once a month, compared with 63% of those who don’t love grilled cheese. And 32% of grilled cheese lovers have sex at least six times a month, compared with 27% of non-grilled cheese lovers.

Two things:

A. How sad that having sex once a month is considered more often.

B.  “There are people who don’t love cheese?  Crazy!!”  I’m such a cheesy girl!!

Here’s the story:  http://www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-survey-grilled-cheese-sex-20150408-story.html

A Couple of Things…

Sam Dog1. Sammy got groomed today!  I wake up her up early (7:30 is early for her these days) and I put her in the car where she normally loves a ride on my lap, but some how she has an inner doggie sense telling her she’s going to get a bath, so she shakes the entire ride.  It’s very dramatic.  When I pick her up it’s a different story, she’s all wiggles in anticipation for the diced up cheeseburger waiting for her in the car.  Now, it’s nap time!!

What a dog’s life!

2.  What kind of fucked up society do we live in where a judge rules it’s not illegal for someone to take photos up a female’s skirt without her knowledge?

a.  The judge was in Portland, OR (sorry Syd Rose).
b.  The perpetrator was 61, the victim, a 13-year-old girl.
c.  He didn’t deny it.

According to the MSN News story, “The practice of ‘upskirting’ has caused problems for prosecutors in other court cases where there are no laws on the books preventing people from taking unauthorized pictures up the skirts of clothed women in public places.”

Again, what kind of fucked up society do we live in where we actually have to enact laws forbidding bad behavior?

3. I can’t get enough of Hozier.  There.  I said it.

Up until about a week ago I hadn’t even heard of him, most likely because I don’t listen to “popular radio.”  But then an acquaintance on Facebook posted this video of Hozier getting surprised during a gig in France by about 20 choir singers in the front row, and well, that’s all it took. I’m a huge fan now.  Bought the album and I love it!

I just found out this tune, “Take me to the Church” is also up for a Grammy for Song of the Year.  Typically that’s a bad thing…but in this case, they got it right.
Please take a look if you haven’t seen it yet:

4. Interesting headline: “Scientist Crack the Code on How to UN-Boil a Hard-Boiled Egg”.  My first thought was , “Well, there goes more research funds down the drain”, but it turns out scientists believe it could have a huge implication for cancer research.  So cool!

Scary Kitty Bart5. And even odder headline?  “Cat Surviving After Accident and Burial”.  Yeah, the owner found his 2-3 year old cat bloodied and stiff after being hit by a car so he buried it.  The kitty showed up five days later in his neighbor’s yard after clawing itself out.

Two things:
a. Ewwww!
b. His neighbor’s yard?  Yeah, I wouldn’t go back home either after my owner buried me either! I’d be pissed too.  Does “Cujo Kitty” come to mind?

Here’s the USA Today story:  http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/01/28/cat-survives-accident-burial/22454211/?hootPostID=bc74c4d6272bddc1fd2d7683fbf026de

6. Since we have Freedom of Speech, that should also mean I have the Freedom to not hear someone’s speech, right?  There are a lot of stupid people out there and I’d rather not deal with them.  Hence, the ability to Unfriend, switch the channels, turn off the radio, or just walk away. Use your power of choice, might make your day that much nicer.

7.  How about Freedom of choice?  There are few companies I hate more than AT&T.  I finally got rid of my land line a couple of years ago, but I still had to use them for internet access.  They had the audacity to ask for permission to run a credit check to switch my internet plan.  THEIR internet plan.  I told her that my being with them with a great record of paying my bill on time for over 20 years in the same location should be good enough.   She disagreed.  I am proud to say I am no longer a customer of this company.  Don’t even get me started with the automatic phone tree. They’re the worst.

There’s actually an “I hate AT&T” Facebook page.  They have 782 Likes.
There’s also a “hate_att” Twitter account.
There are many blogs with that title as well.

I guess I’m not the only one.

lemonades8.  Okay, I admit it:  the Girl Scout cookie called Lemonades ROCK!  But I still didn’t buy a box.

How strong am I?

9.  I’m posting this photo I took February 6, 2015 on Main Street, Ventura…just in case you didn’t see it on the VenturaRocks.com Facebook page.  I posted, “Moon over Main last night. Not the biggest of moons, but cool car, no?”

A Couple of Things…

Mom1.  Today would have been my mother’s 79th birthday.  Honestly, I don’t think she would have aged all that gracefully, but it would have been fun to watch.  I’m sure she would have been that special grandma to Sydney Rose, the kind that do everything against your wishes, the kind the grandkids love!  And I would like to think she would have been proud of how her daughter turned out.   Well I’d like to think so.  🙂

Happy Birthday Mom.  40 years gone, and miss you everyday.

video2.  Seriously, Couldn’t someone have fixed my hair for me????
Here now, City of Ventura employees sharing how green we try to be:

3. My conversation with a gentleman at the recent Latino Business awards presentation touched on what people’s “exit strategy” is for retiring from the work force. Mine is dying. And believe it or not, I’m totally fine with that. I’m happiest when I’m productive!

Lay's4. How can something so good be so evil? I’m referring of course to the new Lay’s Cheesy Garlic Bread favored potato chips.

5. It’s no secret that I play guitar. It’s also no secret that I suck at it. But I was playing around one night recently and I wrote a song (well the music) and I wondered to myself, “Have I heard this before?” So I started asking songwriters that I know whether they question themselves on songs they write. Everyone so far has admitted they do.

James Garner6. I was saddened by the passing of actor James Garner this week. I wasn’t so much into his show, The Rockford Files, but I LOVED his movie Support Your Local Sheriff. He was a great comedic actor. Also, just an aside and a sort of Six Degrees of Separation, Garner was actually born, James Scott Bumgarner…so very close to my married name Baumgardner. So we were sort of akin. RIP in James Garner. He was 86.

7. I placed a button on VenturaRocks.com where readers and fans of the website can make a donation to defray costs. The first few weeks I actually had a VERY small number of contributors but I was completely jazzed. Two of them I had never met before! One of them is the Mayor of a neighboring City! But then I got to thinking, 99.999999999999% of the readers had not made a contribution. What if I charged an annual membership, and maybe throw in a t-shirt. Would that be too much to ask for this service? Would I be able to retire? I’m thinking no and no. I’m still hoping for the honor system.

8 My view on life’s set backs: You can overcome them, or defeat the. Those are the choices. When you say you can’t do anything about it, you have succumbed.

Facebook quiz9. Have you seen that Facebook quiz you can fill out to see “What is Your Old Person Name?” I’m afraid mine would be “Pamela”.

10. I love the kind of laughter when you can’t talk because your body won’t cooperate with what you want to say and tears are rolling the your cheeks… It’s the best!

A Couple of Things…

Squashed Grapes Float

Maggie and me with owners of Squashed Grapes, Adam & Josh.
Trey O’Toole, Andrew Hill, Franklin Murphy & Jacob Scesney playing behind us.

1.  This past weekend the City threw their annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and I was invited to join Kat Merrick on her Totally Local VC float.  The Dan Grimm band played with Jonny accompanying on air guitar.  Maggie and I caught up with the crew from Squashed Grapes (see above) who won the Mayor’s Choice award this year.  I have to say, I love a parade!

2.  I would like to see the sunrise on the East coast someday. Love our West coast sunsets!   It will be a nice bookend.

3.  Ventura College has a terrific program for both Men’s and Women’s basketball.  I love taking in a game whenever I can find the time.   Well this year, the women took State on Sunday.  Congratulations ladies, you rock!!!
State Champs!

4.  All of a sudden I’m seeing Facebook posts, and blogs from women on how “I don’t owe you a smile” or “Stop telling me to smile” or discussing how asking is a form of  harassment. In all honesty, I get it. I have felt passive aggressiveness before with a man requesting I smile. You know what actually works? Do something to make me smile. 🙂 If I felt like smiling, I would be!

5.  Are guitars considered women? I saw a popular local artist post a picture of about a dozen guitars and his caption was “Hello ladies!!!” Plus doesn’t B.B. King call his “Lucille?” Jerry Garcia had one he called “Rosebud” which coincidentally was the nickname Craig Powers called me (my radio air name was Stephanie Rose).

A lot of people say cars are girls too, but I have a girlfriend who calls her’s Steve.

I use to have one of those voice activated hands-free devices which had a limited vocabulary in a female sounding voice. I called her “Beverly.” My daughter thought I was ridiculous. I call my breasts “the girls” but they don’t have specific names nor do I have a favorite. I haven’t named my car or my guitars to date, but I think I just might have to give it some thought.

eyes6.  Sydney recently sent me a text from Oregon which read, “Hey someone said you looked like an owl.”

To which I replied, “Who? Who?”

I thought it was in response to this photo.  But sadly, she was just messing around with me.  Yeah, Oregon is super slow paced.

7.  I’m not normally one to read about psychiatric crap, but there was a blog entitled 12 Most Mind-Blowing Mental Delusions and Syndromes.   Some of them referred to people who suffered from hearing voices, there was one where the person believes they are dead or are missing their internal organs.  But my favorite was called the Paris Syndrome and I SWEAR TO GOD this is what it said about it:

Paris syndrome is a transient experience that affects tourists to Paris who find that the City of Light does not live up to their expectations.  They may experience hallucinations, delusions of persecution, anxiety and other somatic symptoms. Paris syndrome may sound like a joke, but around twenty Japanese tourists a year are thought to be hospitalized with it.

The usual treatment for Paris syndrome is to go home.

Brilliant!

There’s one for Jerusalem as well where people start wearing togas and giving bad sermons.  This is fascinating: “Estimates place the number of people who require hospital admission from this syndrome at around 40 per year.”

Again the treatment is to go home.

8.  Here’s a Public Service Message to those who still smoke.  Please do not throw your butts on the ground or out the window of a car.  Dispose of them properly.  Otherwise, they go down the gutter and directly to our ocean.  That sucks and it’s not alright.

Of course quitting is always encouraged! 😉

9.  I sometimes cut off the crust of my sandwich in the interest of shaving off calories and when I do I am reminded of being told bread crust will make your hair curly.  I wondered if that was just my weird family so I Googled it.  There are a ton of entries on the subject!  In fact, not only does Snopes weigh in – at length – on the subject but this is what WikiAnswers has to say:  “No, your hair shape is determined by the shape of the hair strand. The only way to change it is by getting a perm of some sort or sometimes as a person gets older their hair will change – or pregnancy. That can do it too.”

What a buzzkill. But what is interesting is the fact that this old wives tale dates back more than 300 years old.

A Couple of Things…

1.  Summer is officially over.  Fall is here, but the time change isn’t until 2:00 AM on Sunday, November 3.  It’s always been a bit of a challenge to get through the shorter days of the year, but I find if I keep super busy with my evening website work, then time seems to fly.  Working on adding a store to VenturaRocks.com website as well as banner ads.

Halloween_2012

NEEDED: long blonde wig, blue contact lens, five years out of the sun, and a dress. HELP!!!

2.  The crew I work with at City Hall traditionally dresses up for Halloween as a group.  Last year we dressed up to look like one of our co-workers, Derek Towers. (see photo above, he’s the one wearing the bird head).  It has been suggested for this year that we dress up as characters from The Princess Bride.  I’m very grateful they want me to be the Princess Bride and not Valerie (the ogre woman).

3.  Speaking of the sun.  I love the Sydmeister, but honestly, she could spend more time outdoors.  I immediately thought of her when I saw this photo of an old vintage suntan vending machine ad (see above).  When she was much younger, she would spend all kinds of time outdoors, especially at the beach and she would get a lovely tan.  Now, not so much.

************************************************************************************

4.  Talking about making a difference and working on making a difference are absolutely two different things.  Talk is cheap.  Contributing back to society, and helping to improve conditions on this planet are amongst the worthiest things one can do. And you don’t have to start on a big giant scale.  Offer a smile to someone who is struggling.  Be a mentor.  Set a good example.   Give up your seat to the elderly, pregnant women and anyone having a hard time standing. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

5.  This is just plain flat out brilliant marketing:  There is a place in New York City called Dominique Ansel Bakery where they sell cronuts (for all intents and purposes, a doughnut made with croissant dough).  They sell them for $5 per cronut, with – get this – a limit of two per person.  That creates an instant buzz following the rules of Supply and Demand!  Actually, now that I think of it, they actually may be just a little evil!

baby-deer6.  If the fawn in the hands doesn’t make you warm and fuzzy, I suggest you check for a pulse.  I was going to call it a “doe” at first, but then the Sound of Music lyrics came to mind and I remembered, “Doe, a deer, a female deer…”  So I guess watching all those musicals growing up finally paid off!

7.  Some friends are harder to keep than others.  Some relationships are easier to nurture than others.  Some people perhaps are better left acquaintances.

8.  Have you ever come across a Tuperware container in your refridgerator and the contents were so disgusting that you just threw away the whole thing?  Yeah, me neither.

CCHR at Home and Garden Show Fall 2013

CCHR at Home and Garden Show Fall 2013

9.  Twice a year we have a booth at the Home and Garden Show here in Ventura for CCHR of Ventura (Citizens Commission on Human Rights).  We help to educate about the potential dangers of psychiatric drugs.  We encourage parents do their own due diligence if it has been suggested that their child be put on these drugs.  We ask that they do research on the side effects, long-term and short-term, as well as all the possible alternatives to drugs.  But more importantly, we ask them to seek help to discover if possible, the real why the behavior is occuring in the first place.
Every year 120 million people world wide are prescribed psychotropic drugs which includes nearly 9 million children in America.   (If you or your child is currently on psych drugs, please DO NOT go cold turkey.  Work with a doctor on how best to wean off medication).

10.  There is an element in society who thrive on spreading fear and bad  news.  So to counteract that, it’s imperative good folks spread goodwill and good news.  What have you done today?

11.  I recently had a man compliment me when he found out I have a 19-year-old daughter.  He said, and I quote, “I can’t believe you have a 19 yr old. You’re looking young, healthy and happy! Well done.”  I then wondered if I had to tell him how old I was when I had her.

12.  Seen on Facebook:  “I’m so glad I never jumped on the Muse band wagon.”  Liking a band is jumping on a band wagon?  What an idiot.  The music speaks to you, or it doesn’t.
977965_465793420169978_895115283_o13. Immortal Technique

Adam, Tech and me

Adam, Tech and me

1.  I attended my first rap concert.  Glad it was Immortal Technique.  That man is all about social reform and making a difference to improve conditions.   Sweet guy too!

The management company contacted our website, VenturaRocks.com, and asked us if we wanted to do an interview.  Drummer, Adam Clark, knows Tech like no one else and so he was kind enough to do the interview.  But I got the hug!  And I got to shoot the show!!

It was funny because Tech just strolled up to us in the foyer at the Ventura Theater to get us when it was time to do the interview.  Nobody around noticed!  He’s very unpretentious.

2.  As much as I love people, I still value and demand my own personal space.

3.  During our recent “heat wave” I was clever enough to remember I live at the beach for fast relief.  So very nice!   Not cold at all!!

And what the Hell is that coming out of its mouth???

And what the Hell is that coming out of its mouth???

4.  Yet another life form helping my ego. This is the blobfish, recently given the illustrious distinction as “the world’s ugliest animal” by the Animal Preservation Society.  These bad dudes can be found off the coast of Australia.

5. Do you ever feel like you’re being guilted into “Liking” someone’s Facebook post?
Yep, have them all!

Yep, have them all!

6. J.K. Rowling announced that she will write a  Harry Potter spin-off movie series.  Yay!  The story line will follow the adventures of Newt Scamander who wrote the book, Fantastic Beasts, and Where to Find Them from the first movie.  Looking forward to it!

7.  A recent post on Facebook talked about how this particular woman wanted people to stop posting in the third person. Pam couldn’t agree more!

8. I saw a story headline on MSN under their “Living” section, which read “Happy medium: Celebs rock longer bobs.”  I took a second look because I couldn’t understand why MSN chose to say “longer boobs” instead of “bigger” boobs.  I quickly realized my mistake.

9.  Speaking of boobs, I always tried to correct Sydney (to no avail), that you have breasts, you are a boob.  “Breast” just sounds lovelier.  “Boob” not so much.

candycorn10.  I can tell Halloween is not too far off by the candy corn appearing in the candy dishes around my work.

11.  Met up with Eve and crew for a Journey cover band at the Collection in Oxnard.  I kind of felt like a traitor going over the bridge into another city for music.  Not the biggest Journey fan, but the band nailed it, especially the vocals.

12.  What’s up with those photos people share of really cute pathetic looking dogs with the caption that goes something like, “Tanner dies tomorrow if he’s not adopted.”

Most of these are from Texas.

13.  Went to Staples recently as I needed a new mouse pad.  Seriously, those things should only be $1.00!  Not $8.99.  And, if it has the word “Staples” on it, they should pay me to use it!  Just saying.

A Couple of Things…

So much has happened in the past week!

1. Sydney Rose has embarked on her newest adventure moving to Oregon.  I finally wore her down and she allowed me to accompany her up there; however, she didn’t allow me to drive once (she was making a point that she could do it on her own).

The first day she played her music.  The second day she didn’t turn on the radio or mp3 player once.  She did however insist on playing car games.  We took turns naming off the 50 states, we did it with Wisconsin being the last, and we played Twenty Questions.  We laughed a lot and I’m so glad we had those last two days alone together.  Looking forward to her coming home for Christmas.

2. Missed my flight back home in Portland; first time I’ve ever done that.  Grrrr.   Portland traffic SUCKS!  Just saying.   Got on the later flight all stressed out, but the Bloody Mary and the affable conversation with an older gentleman sitting next to me helped to ease the pain to San Francisco.

3. The little twin propeller plane to Santa Barbara put me right back on edge; should have gone for a second Bloody Mary.

4. Back home on Wednesday and I bought a new car because I officially handed off mine to Sydney in Oregon.  I got myself a new Nissan Sentra.  Cute little guy.  I think he’ll do me right.

5. We had our final band practice on Sunday in preparation for our debut performance. Sydney Rose tagged along (spending as much time together before she was to leave town the next morning).   Christine actually sang on one of the songs. I hadn’t heard her sing before. I told them how great they sounded and Charles said they needed to get me a mic too. Horrified I said NO WAY, I can’t carry a tune. Syd chimed in with, “Have her lip sync!” To which Charles instantly deemed Syd Rose band manager.

6. I did it!  I made my band debut at Bombay’s Wednesday night (no lip syncing).  I was nervous, yet excited.  Having worked about 15 years in radio, I don’t mind being in front of people, but I’ve never played an instrument for anyone, and up until July, I had never played with a band. My band mates Charles and Christine Law made this girl’s dreams come true.  Tommy Marsh joining us made us sound actually pretty good!

7. Thank you Amanda for loaning me the dress (I had to follow Christine’s mandate of dresses and boots).

8. Thank you Jonny Reese for the shot of Patron as soon as I got off the stage.

9. Thank you Diego for the :15 video you posted on Facebook.

10. My dad was there to support me, he even wore a VenturaRocks.com t-shirt!  After the show he asked if he could have the pick I used to play guitar.  Could you die?  Too sweet.

11. My best buds were there to support even though I warned them I would suck.  It was quite a rush creating something out of nothing and seeing people respond to the music.  Charles Law is an amazing songwriter and I was super scared I would make a mockery of his song, “Corrine.”  But with Tommy’s help it sounded pretty damn good!

12. As for “Sweet Dreams”, it turned out that there was a guitarist in the audience who actually played on the original with the Eurythmics as a session player (he allegedly has the Grammy to prove it).  Seriously, this could only happen to me.  We played the Marilyn Manson version which sounded a lot more like a White Stripes version and he came up afterwards and said, and I quote, “I like your feel.”  I’ll take that!

13. Just saying…my band debut was everything I thought it would be.  I had a blast!  Thank you Christine and Charles Law!  Your generosity humbles me.  Love you!

14. From the “You Never Know Who You’ll Run Into” file:  Having breakfast at Art’s Cafe here in Ventura this week and a crew of nice looking young men (probably in their 20s) arrived and sat in a nearby booth.  The waitress asked where they were from as they came in a Mercedes Benz Van.  It turns out that Gary Young was one of them.  Shook his hand as he recently won the Gold at the X-Games in Barcelona for BMX Park riding.  Nice guy.  They were on their way to Santa Barbara for a demonstration at one of their sponsor locations.

15. The Saturday night before Sydney left, Molly, the anti-social cat, actually slept with Syd Rose. So, there is some minuscule amount of devotedness in her cold stone itty bitty kitty heart.

A Couple of Things…

1.  I love saying, “I’m going to band practice.”  Or, “I’m coming back from band practice.” Or “I just left band practice.”  Or “Band practice was a lot of fun.”  I’m driving Sydney Rose crazy!!

2.  I LOVE BAND PRACTICE!!!  Just saying.

3.  Fortunately, I can only get better on the guitar!

4.  And I thought my wrists were sore from shooting hoops!  I had no idea!!  Standing up playing guitar is a whole different ballgame.

5.  We did a punk version of one of Charles Law’s original country rock songs. We fuckin’ rocked it!!

6.  I imagine I’m a cross between Courtney Love and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

7.  There is no reality in the previous statement.

8.  Someone mentioned recently that life gets better after a certain age.  I have to say that life gets better when you decide to finally chase down your dreams.  You can do this anytime.  Start!!

9.  Next up, surfing!

10.  Speaking of surfing…Surf Rodeo was this weekend.  We had a blast!  Sold all kinds of VenturaRocks.com t-shirts.  Two days of fun at Pierpont Beach with music and surf, Ventura is definitely my kind of town!

11.  The fact that I lost my hat, camera, and purse on three separate occasions during the two days of Surf Rodeo, and I managed to find all three in tact (eventually), only goes to prove how much Ventura Rocks!

12.  From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file: A friend recently posted a quote, but the author was listed as Unknown. It’s a worthy quote and I found the author:

“Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself” – George Bernard Shaw.   I agree, “WORD!”

Ventura Music Week 2013 Wrap Up

Ventura Music Week kick off party

Ventura Music Week kick off party

Ventura Music Week (VMW) was put on haphazardly by the City of Ventura the past couple of years.   That’s not a derogatory comment about the City, but rather, a statement of fact.  It wasn’t done properly because they didn’t have a staff and resources backing it up.  They had one individual trying to spearhead it.  Very little support was given.  It was hard work and the end result didn’t get anyone looking forward to the following year.  Eric, our hats go off to you for your efforts.  Eric has since left the City and we miss him dearly.

This year, Peter Brown in Economic Development put out feelers to see if community members would want to take over .  So Kevin Clerici of Downtown Ventura Organization, Kat Merrick of Totally Local VC, David Comden of the VC Reporter came together to see if they could pull it off as a group under the limited guidance and small funding by the City.  Sam Benner of Benner Marketing was invited as his expertise in website design would be valuable, and Gary Stewart of Four Brix Winery had a graphic design background plus he could rally some of the wineries to participate.  I was the last to be invited to the table as a representative of VenturaRocks.com.

There were seven of us working to pull of Ventura Music Week 2013.  No one was being paid.  This was solely a volunteer effort to see this through.

There were a number of meetings before I came on board and there were a number of decisions made that I was not a part of including changing the dates so that VMW aligned with Cash Fest (Roadshow Revival a Tribute to the Music of Johnny Cash).  Another decision made was having highlighted events listed on posters.

The changing of the dates affected few, but those it did, it was a very big deal.  VC Buzz had scheduled (actually rescheduled) their Ventura County Music Awards to align with VMW.  I’m sure they were counting on the momentum of VMW to generate additional interest in their event.  That was unfortunate, but I believe it was done with all the best intentions for VMW itself so there was a major anchor event (Cash Fest).

As for the highlighted events listed on posters, again I believe it was done with the best of intentions so that the venues would work hard on getting extraordinary talent for at least one of the evenings.  If they didn’t, then it would be like any other week in Ventura (which is pretty awesome).   So the group was hoping to inspire highlighted events which would be rewarded with placement on posters and on the VMW website.  The problem?  Venues don’t want to inspire their patrons to go to someone else’s event!    So many of the venues not only didn’t place the posters on their windows, but they verbally complained, and one of them originally refused to pay the agreed fee of $100 to participate.

I still believe the highlighted events is a great idea, but separate posters need to be designed for venues.  Venue posters should state how they are an official VMW venue, and generic info on VMW itself.  Highlighted event posters should be distributed throughout the Ventura county, Santa Barbara county, the Valley and the City of Los Angeles.   They need to what we have to offer so they would want to come to Ventura to hear our music and support VMW.

So you live and learn.

Also, the work load was not distributed evenly.  After the intitial first few meetings, there was never another meeting where all parties participated.  I would say that Kat pulled off at least 50% of the work, I did at least 30, maybe more and the rest was distributed by the remaining members.

Yes Sam created the website from a WordPress template.  And yes Gary created amazing artwork for us and did all the promo for us. David arranged for all the media buys and Kevin helped with Treasury functions and some networking.

But the majority of the work fell on Kat’s shoulders.

My 30-35% including uploading venue information for the VMW weeksite and Facebook page, running around trying to sign up the venues, distributing products to the venues, party set up and tear down, running errands, and then showing up each and every night during the ten nights where I took pictures, and uploaded them at the end of the night, sometimes after 1:00 in the morning.    VMW Facebook page was posted to dozens of times during every day with the events for all the venues, plus a calendar listing for that day.  These I shared on our VenturaRocks.com FB page as well.

The uploading of venue information sounds easily enough, but there were photos to hunt down, upload resize, create posters for, and post for each event for each venue.  We had 100 bands.  30 venues.  10 tens.  1 city.    There was a lot to process just for the web presence.  Plus there were always changes to schedules, and venues were not always available to answer questions or help with the data.  They are busy too after all trying to make a living!

And again, keep in mind, as much work as I personally put into VMW, Kat did even more running around having meetings and getting this thing done.  Crazy, no?

Trying to get venues to sign up was a real interesting exercise.  As VenturaRocks.com, I haven’t had to really work with the venues.  We just helped them (whether they liked it or not.  The Golden China wasn’t even aware of us…Really?  After 4 years guys?).  But now with VMW, we were asking them to participate and to pay $100 to become an official venue.  It wasn’t pretty for some.  There were a few that didn’t participate and it blew my mind!  One of them didn’t pay and the DVO stepped up to grant the money for them…and still they ended up calling it MY VENUE Music Week instead of Ventura Music Week on their personal promo.

And then there were certain musicians who didn’t make it easy on me as well.  They weren’t happy with a photograph, or I had to get their authorization to help promote their gigs.  OUT-FUCKIN’-LANDISH, no?

So I learned that some personalities make doing such an event more of a challenge.  For me, the bottom line is to help make this City prosperous for all.  To make Ventura known as a music destination where people come and spend money in our venues supporting music and our artists and musicians.

For some of the venues, they got it.  For others, they had tunnel vision and it was not about the group effort for our town, but about what was in it for them.    If the town wins and we pull this off, then they win.

We kicked off VMW with an official party at the W Gallery at the corner of California and Main in downtown Ventura.  The VIP portion of the evening saw venue owners, some musicians, key players and councilman Carl Morehouse as well as Mayor Mike Tracy in attendance.  The musicians who played were amazing.  Dan Grimm kicked off the night, then Spencer the Gardener, old school favorites Raging Arb and the Redheads, then the McEuen Brothers.  It was a success and we have the pictures to prove it!

For ten nights we helped to promote Venture Music Week.  Some of the highlights included a screening of Dave Grohl’s film, Sound City: Real to Reel, a visional arts exhibit at the Museusm of Ventura County, a full day all ages concert at Plaza Park called Rock Picnic which included sets by 8Stops7, Army of Freshmen and Rubberneck Lions.  Zoey’s pulled out the stops by having shows which included a show with surfer turned recording artist, Timmy Curran.

It was a great 10 days.  We pulled it off!!!

After all was said and done, I sat down in Peter Brown’s office at City Hall for a short debriefing.  I was tired to be sure, but satisfied until he asked me, “What’s in it for you?”

Stumped, I asked myself, “Jesus,  can’t I just help?”

But now I’ve had time to think about it, and how much work was involved, and how I took seven of my own vacation days to devote to VMW, and how I used my own resources and how I wasn’t able to generate income during those days doing my own website work.  And I have to re-evaluate, “What is in it for me?”

Next year we want to bump this up ten-fold.  We’re going to start working on it 10 months in advance getting sponsorships lined up.  We want to shut down Main Street and have a free concert with a national touring act to kick off the week.  It’s going to be amazing!

But at what personal cost?  How much am I willing to invest in this town for nothing in return?

It’s something I’m going to try not to dwell on as we gear up for 2014.
