A Couple of Things…

Eve, Me and Kat with members of Mandex

Eve, Me and Kat with members of Mandex

1. I’ve been holding my breath waiting on my final grades for the semester.  Why are they so important?  Why do I place so much value in them.  Either I know the material or I don’t.  It really should be pass or fail, no?  Education is a privilege I don’t take lightly.

2.  So far, I got an “A” in Photography.  Neener Neener Neener!!!

3.  Another semester done.  It always feels slightly weird that I no longer have to encorporate studying into my regular schedule.  Kind of afraid my mind will turn to mush.  But it’s funny how time is like a vaccuum.  I clear up four nights of school, and immediately it’s filled with webwork.

4.  As you can tell by the photo above, I’ve been working very hard on making this music scene happen here in Ventura.  It’s really a tough gig to have sometimes!

5.  When asked what my favorite decade of music is, I’m always quick to say the 90s. But after seeing Mandex (above), I’m leaning towards the 80s more and more.  Guns n Roses, Bon Jovi, the Crue.    Good times!

6.  I’ve been putting in mucho hours toward making Ventura Music Week a success this year.  But I have to be honest, I’m so tired of whiners!!!!!

Oh wait…Was I just whining?

7.  I’ve been crazy busy.

8.  I recently had the singer of a band come up to me as I sat at a wine bar, he seranade me as he rocked me gently with his arms around me from behind.   I was very flattered until I heard he was a player…then not so much.

9.  I’m proud to say I’ve never read “50 Shades of Grey”.

10.  My father was hospitalized recently for dehydration while away on vacation in another state.  It wasn’t critical by any means, but there is nothing worse than feeling helpless.

11.  Today is Memorial Day:  “We come, not to mourn our dead soldiers, but to praise them.” — Francis Amasa Walker.  WORD

12.  From my Favorite Facebook Posts file:  Audrey Hepburn quote from the movie “Charade”:     “I don’t bite, you know…unless it’s called for.”

Thanks for listening.

Mother's Day dinner with Nancy, Dad, Syd Rose, me, and Staci Brown

Mother’s Day dinner with Nancy, Dad
Syd Rose, me, and Staci Brown

1.  Mother’s Day was great fun. Felt the love for sure!

2.  I hate falling for someone’s social veneer.

3.  Alright, I admit it.  I love a man in a uniform!

4.  If a cup of coffee costs $2.00 and the same sized cup of hot chocolate costs $1.50, then how come a cup of half coffee and half hot chocolate cost $2.50?  When a coffeehouse charges me more than $2.00 for the combo, I never return. EVER!!!

5.  VenturaRocks.com is really becoming a mover and a shaker here in Ventura.  Plus I have to admit, I love the hugs I get when I go out.

6.  I’m in the middle of finals.  I have just two this semester.  One down, one to go.  Confidence level remains moderate.

7.  I hate being mean, even when it’s warranted.  But sometimes you have to let the other person know enough is enough.  It still leaves my stomach in knots.

8.  When I was married, Chris and I started what we affectionately called, “The-Kevin-Costner-Movies-That-Matter video collection”.  Really, the only ones that really continue to matter in my book are Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, both about baseball, odd.

9.  I’m now on a quest to spot my first owl in the wild.

10.  I’m not a fan of the accordian.

11.  From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file:  “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!  Hell, who am I kidding? I hope you fall down the fucking stairs too.”  Yeah, it’s been one of those weeks.

A Couple of Things…

Last year’s Bike-to-Work day

1.  Bike-to-Work week starts Monday!!!

2.  Is saving $20 worth it for a used wet suit, knowing someone most likely has peed in it? The gal at Play it Again Sports said, “Well you can wash it!”

3.  Mother’s Day has always been a tad bittersweet for me because I miss my mother so much, on the other hand as a Mother I get to celebrate being Sydney Rose’s mom, which has been the greatest adventure of my life.

4.  I absolutely love the sound of a basketball swishing through a metal net. Especially those 3-pointers!

5.  I wrote a blog for VenturaRocks.com on The Worth of an Artist and was promptly attacked for supporting RAW which does in fact require their Artists to sell tickets to their events. I’m going on the record as saying that RAW actually offers a great service when done correctly to all artists. And I’ve heard nothing but great things about our Ventura chapter. That being said, I’ve asked Sara from RAW to remove VenturaRocks.com from their posters because technically it is Pay-to-Play. We’re still listing RAW, just not a sponsor now.

6. The other morning at work as I was trying to wrap my mind around why Sergio Albarran listens to Hall and Oates all the time, I asked him how old he was and he said 27. It just doesn’t make sense! And then he said and I quote, “Hall and Oates are gangster.” Life is a mystery. Some things are just not meant to be understood.

7.  Just learned that Hall and Oates are playing the Ventura Fair this year.

8.  I found an old aircheck from when I worked weekends on B95.1. No comment.

9.  All spiders are Brown Recluses to me

10.  I’m not a big fan of Westerns, western music or rodeos. But man, certain cowboys make me swoon!

11.  From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file:  “When one door closes, another one opens. Or you could just open the closed door, that’s how they work.”

Thanks for listening.

A Couple of Things…

Boys playing in the ocean.

1. Saturday in Ventura was picture perfect!  Sunshine, Earth Day celebrations along the promenade at the beach.  Boys playing in the ocean (see photo above), music at the fairgrounds. Marty Party up at the ranch behind Two Trees.  Life is good!

2. Ventura has so much amazing talent. VenturaRocks.com is doing our share of helping to promote this scene.  Now we just need to get more people out supporting it!

3. I saw fireflies in person (in flies?) for the first time in my life five years ago in Louisiana.  They are freakin’ cool.  I thought Disney was pulling my leg on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride all these years.

4. From my “Little Did They Know” file:  I’m a sucker for sardines on saltines with onions.

5. I’ve never had a fast food drive-thru error in my favor.

6. I love music and I love live radio, but I especially love that sense of community when the two come magically together once in a blue moon.  The staff, from the owner to the PD to the on-air crew definitely have to share that vision.  I was lucky to be a part of one once.

7. On the flip-side, I don’t like corporate radio shoving their playlist down your throat.  I don’t like voice tracks. I’ve been unlucky to be a part of one once..for about three months. Sucked the life out of me.

8. WARNING!!!  Flashback moment:   I have to say, I really miss eating Trix and watching Bugs Bunny on Saturday mornings.

9. Clipper Nation Baby!!!

10. From my “Favorite Facebook Posts” file::  “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” – Mark Twain

VenturaRocks.com 4th Anniversary Party

VenturaRocks.com 4th Anniversary Party

(Originally posted on Facebook, March 21, 2013)

1. Spring has sprung.  Life is incredibly good.

2. I love participating in parades, especially in a small town like Ventura.  It’s so corny, you just have to embrace it! The look on the children’s faces makes being goofy so worthwhile.

3. It fascinates me how loud women get when there are more than four at  a table.  I also find that the volume increases exponentially by the number of drinks ordered.

4. I love a good book.  I love a good movie.  I love a good song.  But most of all, I love a good friend.

5. Sydney Rose said the funniest thing the other day when I mentioned that she gets her assertiveness from me.  She totally agreed and then pondered out loud wondering what she got from her dad.  Not missing a beat, we both said at the same time, “Flakiness.”  To which we had a good laugh!

6. I want you to succeed.  How can I help?

7. From my Favorite Facebook Quotes file:  “I’m a non-violent person until I see I see a spider.  Then I turn into Al Capone, and “I want him DEAD!  I want his family DEAD!  I want his house burned to the GROUND!”    Yeah, that’s me.

8. My friend reminded me recently, “In no way are you ever responsible for another’s bad behavior.”  That may be true my dear friend, but we can hold them accountable for it. And more than that, we can shame them and let them know we won’t stand for it.

VenturaRocks.com just celebrated our 4-year anniversary on Sunday.  I selected a few of the photos to share in the montage I posted. I want to  thank my BUSINESS partner Eve for all her hard work. If you get a chance, please read my annual State-of-the-Ventura-Rocks-Website address:

Thanks for reading and for your comments!  I really do love our discussions!!

Bob's Big Boy

Bob’s Big Boy

(Originally posted on Facebook March 11, 2013)

1. Spring Break is here! Yippee!! What am I doing?  Working more!!! Nice.

2. I learned this weekend that beets on pizza is not such a good thing.  For starters, in a dimly lit room, they look like pepperoni.  Trust me, they taste nothing like pepperoni.

3. However, I tried Collard Greens for the first time last week, and nom nom nom! Delicious!!

4. I recently had to turn down the advances of a very nice man. Either the chemistry is there or it isn’t.  It’s never ever an easy thing to do, that is unless they’re a complete jerk.  But you know I don’t attract complete jerks.  Oh wait…

5. Book or movie first?  Discuss please.

6. Oh!  I’m learning bandspeak.  When a band says they go on at 9:00 pm, that actually means somewhere between 10 and 10:45.  It’s not an exact science.

7. So, VenturaRocks.com is having its first ever  event.  It’s our 4th anniversary so we’ll be celebrating with a few hundred peeps at Bombay Bar & Grill on St. Patrick’s day with our favorite bad boys The Shoemaker Brothers.  Join us if you can!

8. Living with three women has its advantages.  For instance, I find a lot more reading material around the house, little notes if you will.  Case in point, the other day I found this sticky note:  “Eat Me”  on a container of homemade peanut butter cookies.

9. It looks like  Sydney Rose landed another job. Yep! She’s about to be once again gainfully employeed at a new burger restaurant here in town.

10. I thank my lucky stars I no longer work in a burger joint.

11. Saw a post which stated, “The way people treat you, is a statement about who they are as a human being.  It is not a statement about you.”  author unknown.  True, but not always easy to see.

Photo was taken back when I was working at Bob’s Big Boy on Beach Blvd while I was attending Fullerton College. I was around 21.  We use to turn up the
music, take off our aprons, tie up our shirts and hitch up our skirts, and we became…The Bob-ettes!!!  One way to get your side-work down after a long night of schlepping  burgers. I took the photo on the right…so you don’t get to see my dance moves, which is a good thing.

A Couple of Things…March 4, 2013

(Originally posted on Facebook, March 4, 2013)

1. It’s not intuitive for me to withhold my communication.  It’s a blessing and a curse.

2. Looking forward to Spring Break.  Don’t know why.  It’s not like I’m going anywhere, but it will be nice to have those four nights for something other than school.

3.  When I first came to Facebook, I thought 15-20 Friends would be enough.  Now I have 100.  Of course, some of them are just acquaintances, even
one or two are friends of friends but I enjoy their posts.  From time to time I Unfriend a person…for one or two of the following reasons:
a.  We’re already Friends on the VenturaRocks.com Facebook page.  I don’t need to see their post twice.
b.  and, they never comment or Like anything I post.
c.  and/or they never post anything.
d.  They piss me off.

4. VenturaRocks.com 4th year anniversary is on Sunday, March 17. We’ll be celebrating all weekend long!

5. Sydney Rose totally has my back.  This past weekend when she came down to join us at Bombay’s for music and fun, a guy came up and started  hitting on her.  He said, “Why don’t you come hang out with me and get away from your mom.” To which she responded, “Dude, I came down to hang out with my mom!”

6. Staci Brown is thinking of making Syd and I t-shirts, one saying “Team Molly” and the other “Team Sammy”.  Hehehe.  That’s just funny.  Go Team Sammy!!!

7. It’s real easy  to point out all the bad things and decide why things are not going the  way you want them to.  That’s all fine and dandy as long as you’re
rolling up your sleeves and doing something about it.   Otherwise, shut the hell up.

8a. If I die anytime soon, be assured that I have no disappointments other than having never learned to surf.   Hopefully I can check that off my list this year.

8b. I chose the word disappointment instead of regret because one definition of regret implies a feeling of sorrow or remorse for a fault, act, loss, etc.  Case in point, I regret that I couldn’t fix a falling out, or I regret when I ate that last piece of pizza.  Regrets suck.  Let them go.

8c. That being said, I should probably add more items to my list of things I want to accomplish (NOT A BUCKET LIST) such as taking a photography trip to New Zealand, learning to bake bread…

9. One of the funniest posts I’ve seen on the VenturaRocks.com Facebook page was from a fan of our page, he simply wrote, “Apparently Man With the Golden Arm is not a James Bond movie.”

Photo taken last summer at the Original Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax, Los Angeles, CA.

Central Park 2009

(Originally posted on Facebook Feburary 15 2013)

1. Anybody else a little worried about meteors now?

2. Made it through Valentine’s Day unscathed.  Well that’s something.

3. So Sydney Rose is a bona fide driver with a California Driver’s license now. Third time’s the charm! You have no idea how scary it was when she took off on her first solo excursion.

4. My first photo got critiqued in class this week.  My teacher said it was a perfect picture as far as technique went, and then the class proceeded to pick apart the composition.  Live & learn!

5. Acute Bronchitis sucks. I had round two last week, and I was OUT for four days. That never happens!

6. Clipper Nation Baby!  Won my third burrito of the season when the Clips took down the Lakers, yet again.  One more match up before the season’s over.  I’m thinking it will be 4 out of 4.

7. VenturaRocks.com is a legal entity now.  Baby steps…

8. I’ve been reading some posts recently about the music scene in Ventura and I’m reminded yet again that no matter what you want to do, there will be an opposing force.  Even with music?  Some things just don’t make any sense.

9. The photo I posted was from July, 2009, in Central Park. Love New York city.  Need to go back soon!

10. I love my family & friends.  WORD.

A Couple of Things…January 11, 2013

In my wedding dress

Sydney in my wedding dress

(Originally posted on Facebook January 11, 2013)

1.  Did you know that I have the ability to communicate with anyone on any subject?  Kind of fun.  Just ask Staci Brown.

2.  I have come to terms that I really love men.  Which kinda sucks.

3.  There comes a point in your life where you stop bending over
backwards for that certain person and you start bending forward…so
they can KISS YOUR ASS!  (author unknown).

4.  Completing those small projects so opens up one’s ability to take on more responsibility.   Bring it on.

5.  Oh! By the way, Fuck you cancer. Leave my friends alone!

6.  Sydney Rose is about the cutest thing in the whole wide world when I
come home from work and she’s making me dinner…wearing an apron.
Trust me, I’ll capture a picture of her wearing it one of these days.

7.  I couldn’t shoot hoops for almost two weeks with acute bronchitis.
(mock up Roseanne Roseannadanna voice)  “I thought I was gonna die.”
Back to it now and getting my three-pointers back.

8.  Looking forward to starting school on Monday again; four nights a week is going to be rough (see #4).

9.  We’ve been going out a lot more “shaking hands and kissing babies”
and the response to VenturaRocks.com has been completely gratifying.

K, thanks for listening.

Me and Sydney

(originally posted on Faceback December 27, 2012)

1.  2012 was not the best of…nor was it the worst of years.  But it’s one
of my favorites because I’ve made a lot of new friends who have
enhanced…and some who have challenged me.  Both have made me a better
person.

2. The whole dating thing is over-rated.  If I keep saying this over and over, it’s bound to come true…one of these decades.

3. I’ve learned to never slow dance with a man wearing cologne. It’s
like he’s marked his territory because you smell like him the rest of
the night.  Ick.

4. I have to say, that Sydney Rose is pretty funny. I love how my friends have all embraced her.

5. Two more classes this semester starting mid January.  Accounting and
Photography.  Since I’m thinking both classes will be applicable, they
should be fairly easy, no?

6. Clipper Nation!!!

7. Never for a second think you will NOT have an opposing force when you
want to do something/anything to better your community.  YOU ALWAYS
WILL!!!  Stick to your guns, rally the troops, and git ‘er done.
Ventura has a lot of musical talent, and amazing venues to showcase
them.  Let’s keep the momentum going.

8.  New Year’s resolutions?  Lose weight?  Stop smoking?  Someone not too long ago said
to not loose the caboose.  And I quit smoking over 20 years ago.  I
think this year will be all about finally making VenturaRocks.com a
viable entity.    It will not only help Eve and myself with supplemental
income, but it will help benefit our town and our music community by
helping to get the word out and people into the venues to support the
arts.
