About A Couple of Things by Pam Baumgardner

Living the good life in Ventura, CA.

A Couple of Things…

Shooting Hoops1.  Shooting hoops is still my favorite form of exercise.  Maggie McKinney joined me recently and she may just consider joining me more often!  I sincerely hope so!!

2.  People having difficulties with the time change need to heed my advice.  Go to bed when you’re tired and not by what the clock says.  I never feel like I’ve lost or gained an hour.  Could just be me though.

3.  Just my opinion, but people should not say, “I miss you” if they don’t mean it.

4.  True story: When I use to work overnights at 96-ZTR, I would hang out on-the-air with the morning show guys as we transitioned between our shifts. Jimmy Baron like to ask about Chris because we were still newlyweds at the time and he loved to refer to him as the C-Man, which you know, if you say it just right….

5.  From my “You Never Know Who You Will Run Into” file, I ran into Kevin Costner at Ventura College during a Ventura High Cougar’s CIF playoff game February 2011.  He was sitting in front of us with some friends and his young son.   I understand he grew up here in Ventura, but I think he was a Bulldog.
Kevin Costner

6.  I saw an article called, “17 Signs That You’d Qualify as a Witch in 1692.”
#1.  You are female.

Bummer

7.  Recent headline:  “Sewer was blocked by large Pooh.”
Poor Pooh!

8.  They say as soon as you give birth, you forget the pain.  Well I say, That’s such a crock of shit!  I remember it clearly!  By the way, “When was the last time you called your mother Sydney Rose????”

Yeah, I know, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.Sydney

9. I did a post on Facebook about how I loathe the expression, “It’s not personal, it’s business.” I have a hard time wrapping my head around that saying, because people fall back on that when they’ve done something that wasn’t quite cool, or fair.

There’s a great scene in the movie, You’ve Got Mail, covering this very subject when he ran her out of business.

Joe Fox: It wasn’t… personal.
Kathleen Kelly: What is that supposed to mean? I am so sick of that. All that means is that it wasn’t personal to you. But it was personal to me. It’s *personal* to a lot of people. And what’s so wrong with being personal, anyway?
Joe Fox: Uh, nothing.
Kathleen Kelly: Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.

I love that movie!

From my “Little Did They Know” file, I bawled my eyes out during The Nutty Professor remake years ago, the one with Eddie Murphy?  It was that scene where he is the fat version of himself, and he is out on a date at a comedy club where the comedian just insults the bejebbers out of him.  He just sat there and took it and I was a just a blubbering mess.

11.  Sticking with movies, I am so behind on seeing the latest movies out.  The last one was American Hustle on Christmas, and the only movie I had seen that was nominated for anything at the Academy Awards this year. I kinda wanna see Mr. Peabody & Sherman (probably not a contender for next year’s award season).

12.  From my favorite quotes file:  “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

(What’s so Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding?

I feel bad for John Travolta and his faux pas at the Oscar’s for mispronouncing the singer’s name. I guarantee when he realized his mistake, he was horrified and apologized for it.  In fact I looked it up, yes, he was in fact, beating himself up over it.

People continue to belittle and make fun of this person because he is a celebrity and he made an embarrassing mistake.  It’s been over-the-top badgering of another human being who did nothing intentionally cruel.  He made a mistake.  This is a man who has had to endure the incredible loss of his son just a few years ago.  I have close friends who work with him daily.  My daughter Sydney has met him, and I’ve heard nothing but the kindest words about his character. He has a genuine love for people and is always the first to offer help.

So I was at a loss, and frankly, I was saddened by the easy potshots people have been taking at this man in the media and on Facebook.

I shared my thoughts with one of my best friends, Linda LeBrock, who noted, “This is the society we live in. And it’s not pretty. Why all the buzz about Leo Di Caprio not winning. How many memes out there making fun of Leo. Why? What does this do for us. Are we jealous? Is our own financial stress making us resent others who are successful? It’s not exactly an appeal to our better angels to take such enormous pleasure in the sufferings or set backs of others.”

She then said, “Go Pammy, ‘promote (practice) kindness. Whenever possible. And it’s always possible.’ –Dali Lama”

So in the immortal words of Elvis Costello I ask, “What’s so funny about peace love and understanding?”

NOTHING.

So here now I share just a couple of amazing stories to counter balance the lack of empathy I’ve been witnessing and I hope this raises our collective spirits to be more understanding and not take joy in the mistakes or miseries of others.

Final day...

The Hospital allowed this lady’s cat to visit her during her last day on earth.

Homeless man ‘wins’ Lottery and the first thing he wants to do is share the money with others.

Angels - everyone of themDelaney BrownA little 8 year old girl in her final days with leukemia had a dying wish to meet Taylor Swift (who did a video chat with her) and to have some people come by and sing Christmas caroles.  The next evening people started to arrive.  First there were a hundred, then a thousand then there were about 10,000 people on the street singing to her.  Too sick to sit up, she gave two thumbs up.  Six days later, she passed away on December 26, 2013 at 3:10 am with her family and friends surrounding her.

Did you know there is actually an organization called “The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation”?    Inspiring people to practice kindness and pass it on to others.

cheetosIf you know me, you know that I ain’t a saint and I’ll admit I’ve laughed out loud at videos of someone slipping on ice or running into a tree (not seriously injured of course). I find a lot of the “Sick Bastard” mimes incredibly funny, and the Huffington Post is always good for a laugh or two including posing the question, “Do you really want to put that in your mouth?” to the picture of a flaming hot Cheeto which looks suspiciously like a man masturbating. (See?  Now that’s funny!)

My intention is not to shame anyone who has taken these easy potshots. I get it, you think you’re making others laugh.  But celebrities are real people.  Having worked in radio and on a music and entertainment magazine in Los Angeles, I’ve met my fair share of them.  They are people first and they hurt and have feelings like the rest of us “normal folk.”

Robert Downey Jr.I would like to end this post with another one if you dare, written by Dana Reinhardt about Robert Downey Jr.

Please take another five minutes to read a story about her brief encounter with this incredible celebrity who has fought true demons and his bouts with drug addiction.  It’s the final line of her story that got to me most:

A Couple of Things…

1.  From my “Little Did They Know” file, I’ve lost over 150 pounds.  Of course they were the same 5-10 pounds over and over and over again, but still.

SRO Benefit
2.  You ever wake up in a cold sweat wondering what photos will surface on social media from the night before? Yeah, me neither.

3.  I have a friend who no matter what you state, will have a counter-perspective or a flat out disagreement.  Use to piss me off.   But since I started to expect it, it entertains me.  If the truth be known, I’ve learned a thing or two in the process.

4. I hate it when no spoiler alert is given.

Kevin Bacon and Sean Hayes5.  Just so you know, I have one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon.

K, so when I worked on Buzzine Magazine, one of our investors worked on Will and Grace (hence the one degree of separation since Bacon guest starred on W&G).  One day I arrived at the office to find the prop used on that particular episode in our office.  It was a life-size cardboard cut out of Kevin Bacon.  My partner Aaron, would fuck with me by moving it from time to time and I would arrive in my office, and BAM! There was Kevin Bacon.  Good times.

6.  I always try to do the surveys after I receive some sort of service, like staying at a hotel, or buying a car, or getting support from website hosting company.    I figure, I’m already on their email list and I do want them to provide better service or maintain it if its excellent.

7.  Did you see the photos of the deceased Puerto Rican boxer who was propped up in a fake boxing ring where his fans could walk up and have their photo taken with him?  I sincerely hope this does not start a whole new fad.  Freaked me out!! Don’t believe me?  Google it.

8.  One has to learn that there is always going to be someone who doesn’t like you.  Which leads to the question, HOW COME?!!!!

smoker9.  So grateful Sydney Rose quit smoking.

Yes, I use to smoke.  I gave it up the year before I wanted to get pregnant to rid a lot of the toxins out of my body.  I never went back.  That doesn’t mean the cravings went away altogether, and it doesn’t mean I don’t still have nightmares that I started smoking again, but I’m sure glad I don’t.  (I’m thinking I was around 24 in the pix)

eyes10.  So grateful I had Lasik eye surgery.

Yes, I use to wear contacts and before that funky eye glasses which I thought were fashionable for the day.  (I’m thinking I was around 21?)
I had the procedure done about ten years ago when not only couldn’t I see far away (since the 4th grade), but I could no longer see the small print either!  It was quite a miracle waking up the next morning and being able to see the clock across the room.

11.  From my favorite quotes file:  “Bless her heart” is the nice way to say “What a fucking lunatic” – Molly McNearney, writer for Jimmy Kimmel

Thanks for listening!

A Couple of Things…

Ear Piercing1.  I mentioned last September when my Aunt pierced my first ear (I was around 10 years old) that I promptly passed out.  It’s been awhile since I’ve worn earring because my right ear had closed about a year or so ago.  I went to the mall this past weekend to get it re-pierced and reminisced about when Sydney Rose decided she wanted her ears pierced, I went to exact same kiosk. We had decided to leave it up to her on if and when she wanted to have holes run through her body.  She was brave.  She shed a tear or two, but she was a trooper.  And for the record, I didn’t pass out this time.

2.  I have a couple of friends who are on a couple of those dating sites.  I’ve wondered about what I would put to talk about myself.  What do you think?

“I like short walks on the beach, long deep conversations, all kinds of music, puppy dogs, kittens and basketball.   Oh! And a nice rib-eye steak from time to time.”

3.   Did you hear about the South Carolina woman who spent the night in jail for failing to return a VHS tape she rented nine years ago?   She was released after appearing before a judge.  She rented Monster-in-law 9 years ago!  She went to the sheriff’s to file an unrelated report and her name came up red-tagged for an outstanding arrest warrant.

Note to self:  Avoid Pickens County, South Carolina.

4.  As I get older I have come to the realization that there is such a thing as too small a font.

5.  When did eating off a food truck become the thing to do?

6.  I’ve been bowling again since Mr. Mimiaga has decided to master the sport.  We’ve been going the past couple of Friday nights before I head out for music. I use to play in a league when I was in radio.  My average was around 130.  Still is.  I guess it’s like riding a bike.

7.  I’m back to trying to wear dresses at least once a week.  On my way into work one morning recently, my boss remarked, “You have sock lines.”  I KNOW!!!   I’m in the sun everyday for a half hour shooting hoops.  What I don’t have time for is sunbathing to even up the tan lines on my ankles!  It’s my personal version of a farmer’s tan.

man-baby8.  I hate it when someone Photoshops the head of an adult and places it on the body of a baby (or vice versa).  Creeps me out!!  And no, Jeff Hereford, you’re not the only one.

9.  Love this advice:  He’ll never change.  Let him go.

10.  There are certain people when you share exciting news, will always point out a fault in it or a downside.  I try not to spend a lot of time with them.

11.  I’m thinking of taking swing dance lessons.

12.  This pun is for Sydney Rose:  “Becoming a vegetarian is a huge missed steak.”
HAHAHA!!!

13.  From my favorite quotes file:  “Develop interest in life as you see it; in people, things, literature, music – the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself.”  – Henry Miller

Thanks for listening.

Smile Because it Happened

I’ve always loved the quote from Dr. Seuss, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”  It reminds me that we have the ability to see things in different perspectives.  Those who forget they have that ability are typically unhappy people, or their comfort zone is at “victim”.

I think back on all my relationships and there isn’t one that I would like to forget.  Okay, I lied.  There is that one, but seriously, he is bat ass crazy and that was a really bad choice on my behalf.

See what I did there?  I took responsibility for a bad choice.  And now, I smile at it.

Anyways…relationships are a funny thing.  In the past I would get insecure because a guy didn’t like me.  I would dwell on that fact, and pay no attention to the guys who had expressed interest in me. AND THEN of course, I have to take a look at the guys I had to tell that I didn’t feel that way about them.  It’s NEVER easy.  Egos can be fragile.

The truth is, I love men.  I love friendships.  I love hugs.

And if I were being brutally honest, I miss being married and believing that person will always be there for me.  I miss the shared laughter, the shared trials and tribulations of life, I miss sharing a life together.

One of my favorite stories about my ex-husband revolves around another famous quote you hear all the time:
We were seriously stressed out about time.  I was working in radio (you can not be late to be on-the-air), he was working his full time job and Sydney Rose was about six months old. Even though we both worked here in Ventura, we would commute over 20 miles each way to take her to stay with her Grandma because we knew she had a vested interest in seeing Sydney was well taken care of and happy.  I was also nursing Sydney at the time so I had to express my milk (yeah, kind of graphic, but get over it).  So we’re running around in the morning trying to get out of the house when I went to hand my husband the bottle of expressed mother’s milk and it dropped spilling all over the kitchen floor.

Time seemed to stand still until he said completely deadpanned, “There’s no use crying over spilled milk.”

There was no doubt about it, he had a great sense of humor.  We remained married for another eight years and had some great times raising Sydney, but it wasn’t working for him and he left.

With distance comes clarity and while I miss those things I mentioned about being married, I don’t miss him.

But I do smile because it happened.

A Couple of Things…

CCHR Dinner1a.  We had the best time at the black-tie event on Saturday at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. My date was beautiful, the food delicious, and the topic inspired us to do more to help clean up the mental health field as it was the annual Citizens Commission on Human Rights awards banquet.

CCHR of Ventura

CCHR of Ventura, Me, Mrs. Vest, Amy and Carol

1b.  I’ve been working with Carol, Amy and Mrs. Vest (who recently replaced Sydney when she moved) on our local chapter of CCHR for many years.  CCHR (Citizens Commission on Human Rights) is an international mental health watchdog and human rights organization. It is a non-religious, non-political, non-profit organization and works alongside hundreds of CCHR Commissioners (advisors) including doctors, psychologists, educators, health care experts, human and civil rights activists, artists and others dedicating to reforming the field of mental health and is responsible for helping enact more than 150 laws internationally that protect individuals from abusive or coercive practices committed under the guise of mental health.

1c.  I sent Sydney Rose a “selfie” I took in the In-N-Out drive-thru line after I had my hair and make up done.  Her response, “Aw ma!  You’re all grown up!”

1d.  Did you see the back of my dress.  Sexy Momma.

Different2.  That awkward moment in high school when you’re out partying with your best buds and you all pile into your friend’s car and she can’t start the car because she is laughing so hard but finally stammers out, “This isn’t my car!”

3.   There is a blog out there called “Confessions of a Funeral Director”.  It caught my attention because my mother use to work at Rose Hills Mortuary, and well she had odd stories about the joint.  This particular posting was called Ten Things About Embalming  (replacing blood with embalming fluid).  A couple of interesting points:

  • It guarantees you won’t be buried alive.
  • It helps make the symbol of death look pretty.
  • Embalming fluid is not environmentally friendly.
  • It is rarely required.
  • Embalming fluid shouldn’t be smoked.

Really?  Who would try to smoke embalming fluid?  Baffles the mind.
Me? Cremation all the way.   I don’t want my dead body on display.

french fries4.  Sydney Rose insists eating cold french fries is the same as eating cold popcorn.  I ask, could she be more wrong???

5.  I like to share my motto from time to time:   “Work Hard – Play Harder”

6. From my favorite quotes file:  “Life is tough, but it’s tougher if you’re stupid.” – John Wayne
The Sands of Iwo Jima

Thanks for listening

A Couple of Things…

LBD1. I will be attending a black tie event this weekend.  I bought my dress three years ago but by the time I got around to trying to hem it, it was too late and I ended up wearing another dress I already had.  It’s been too long since I dressed up like a grown up in classy garb!  Looking forward to it, plus Ms. Vest is going to be my hot date for the night!  Yeah I know.  She’s married.  Oh! And, yeah, we’re not gay.   Nevertheless, we plan to have a great time!!

2.  Going from classy to crassy, and continuing the hot dog conversation from my previous post… I’ve been told there is a food truck with the best hot dogs in Ventura called, wait for it, The Greasy Weiner.”  Great! Here I am, the girl who cuts up her dog at Bombay’s because it looks too phallic to be eating it the traditional way IN A BAR,   and I’m going to be seen eating a “greasy weiner” on the streets?

3.  Brilliant post seen on Twitter:

“I hate people who don’t know the difference between ‘Your’ and ‘You’re’.
There fucking idiots.”

Bwahahaha!!!
(by the way, if you don’t get this joke you should contact me immediately!)

4.  Some people measure driving distance by miles, and some by time.  For instance, “It’s 30 miles to Santa Barbara.” vs “It takes a half an hour to get to Santa Barbara.”  Sometimes I measure distance in songs.  “It should take me only eight songs to get to Santa Barbara.”

MeerkatsMeerkat5. I believe the Meerkat is my favorite animal to watch.   I could hang out at the Santa Barbara zoo observing these little guys all day long.  They have such soulful looks in their eyes.  And they acknowledge you and watch you right back!  Love them!

And who didn’t love Timon in the Lion King?  Nathan Lane was the voice behind the character in the Disney movie.  Great stuff.  The movie came out the same year Syd Rose was born.

6. Something you may not know about me.  My father use to drag my sorry ass out of bed to watch those NASA launches in the wee hours of the morning when I was growing up.  I always loved following our adventures into space, that is until I was on-the-air at KEZY that fateful day.   This week marks the anniversary of the Challenger tragedy.  I actually got yelled at for announcing it on the air because we were not a “news station”.  I still couldn’t disagree more with that policy.

KEZY7. Speaking of that Orange County station (which was mostly great fun being the first radio station I got to work at), my mentor, Craig Powers, posted on Facebook earlier this week about KEZY and a whole bunch of past announcers and other folks chimed in including an engineer who worked there the same time I did.  He has this internet website page about it and lo and behold, there I am!  Too funny!!!  I’m such a geek!

8. I once saw a TV show, or maybe it was a segment on a program where they’d pick women at random walking by and put them on a pedestal on a busy public street and they’d ask people how old they thought she was.  These women were horrified to learn most guessed they were 10 years older than they were.
Honestly, my women friends ALL look at least 10 years younger than they are.  I believe it’s in the water here in Ventura.

Mike's Daily Podcast9.  I’m proud to say that my friend Mike Matthews created the “Pam Baumgardner Files” a while back for his Mike’s Daily Podcast. From time to time whenever I post a comment or make a suggestion, he’ll share that with his audience.   He does these crazy fun characters and will interview up and coming artists from time to time.
Check him out:  http://mikesdailypodcast.com/

10.  Whenever I get super upset, I clean.  I’ll tidy up my desk, then I’ll dust, maybe vacuum,  do the dishes, mop the kitchen floor, do the laundry.  A pristine house = one pissed off gal.

But seriously, all kidding aside, whenever I do get upset with someone.  I take a moment to calm down, and then I do some busy work (depending on the upset, sometimes longer than other times). But then as if by magic, I get this incredible feeling of affinity for mankind.  That person may still be “wrong”, but in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter.  Very therapeutic.  Plus I get more order in my surroundings!

11.  I LOVE rollercoasters!  Metalica…not so much.

12.  From my favorite quotes file, and this one is dedicated to my daughter, Sydney Rose:  “Vegetables are interesting but lack a sense of purpose when unaccompanied by a good cut of meat.”  Fran Lebowitz

Thanks for listening.

A Couple of Things…

Molly the Sexy Beast1.  I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but seriously, love should not hurt.

2.  OMG I LOVE SOCIAL MEDIA.
So I went through my Twitter feed and found one about music at Bombay’s so I retweeted.  Then later, I saw someone had retweeted by retweet.  I thought that kind of funny so I posted on Facebook, “My retweet just got retweeted! Go Bombay’s!”.  Then, someone shared my post about my retweet getting retweeted!  Now if you followed that.  You my friend know social media and get a star for the day!

3.  I recently started working on a project where identical twins are partners in this business.  I had been working with just one of them up to this point when I attended a party where they both were in attendance.  I had to confess to my new friend that the only way I could tell them apart was the moment when one of them recognized me.  He just laughed!   I’m sure I’ll catch on to the sublime nuances each of them have.

FROOT Loops4a.  Sad to say I recently realized Fruit Loops is actually Froot Loops when I read a story about how we’ve all been deceived.  All six Froot Loop colors are actually the same flavor.  Apparently the recipe has not changed since 1962.  Bastards!

4b.  While doing some research on the aforementioned bastards, it turns out someone had actually tried to sue Kellogg’s for causing him to believe the product contained real, nutritious fruit.   At least two federal judges have previously held that the use of the word “Froot” cannot reasonably be interpreted as suggesting the presence of real “fruit,” and that  “froot” is not real, and real fruit does not come in “loops.”

5.  I read an article called “Seven tips on how to improve flirting.”  The first one once again reinforced the idea that I suck at flirting, “Act Natural.”  I just can’t!  I start cracking up and get all weird.   The next tip, “Do not be weird.”    Yeah, I’m screwed.

The Captain and Tennille6.  I have to admit it made me a tad sad to learn that The Captain and Tennille were calling it quits after 39 years of marriage.  It angered me all the quips about how “Love Won’t Keep Us Together” or something along those lines.  For starters, they probably stopped loving each other, and so love wouldn’t keep them together.  And I can’t help but wonder how many years did they stay together just because they didn’t want to let others down?

7.  I know you can’t please all the people all the time, and I’ve learned over the years that no matter what you do, someone will be upset.  So you just have to get good at looking at the greater good.

National Pie Day 20148.  Yesterday was National Pie day.  When I brought it to my co-workers’ attention and asked if we should go out and get some pies, they all looked at me like I was a dumb ass.
(edited for clarification purposes:  The answer is ALWAYS yes.  They looked at me odd because I felt the need to ask!  The pies above arrived within the hour.)

9.  I’ve been going through a hot dog phase.  Okay, the phase has been over two years, but relatively speaking, it’s a phase of my life.  In any case,  I’ve always loved the dogs at Costco and Der Weinerschnietzel, but since Bombay’s came out with their new menu, their hot dog wrapped in bacon on a sweet roll with hot mustard, OMG!  But now I’m catching wind from Maggie McKinney that there is a food truck with dogs to die for.  So the phase continues and the hunt begins.

Tommy Dreamer10.  I took my camera to the movie set of a film being shot here in Ventura by members of the band Army of Freshmen.  Several local musicians were on hand as extras and they kept pointing out the wrestlers that were actors on the set.  I hadn’t heard of any of them, but they thought it was the coolest thing!  Above is Tommy Dreamer, “The Innovator of Violence.”  Grrr!

11.  I just realized how often I write about food.

12.  “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”  – Bruce Lee

Thanks for listening!

A Couple of Things…

1.  Every year on the anniversary of the Northridge earthquake, I am reminded of the first time Sydney Rose kicked me (in utero). I guess my adrenalin must have woke her up.  It was as if she were saying, “WTF?”  I was about five months pregnant. I felt a slight fluttering movement inside my tummy.  Another amazing pleasure moment in life.  I still miss that sensation.

Samantha Boom Boom Baumgardner2.  Look who got a bath!!!

3.  This winter weather in the 80s is quite delightful.

4.  I heard a great line while listening to a rerun of Will & Grace as given by Karen Walker:  “You know what I’m not hearing? An actual apology or a decent Rolling Stones song since 1973.”

5.  I don’t stalk.  I do recon.

6.  Recent Headlines seen:

  • “Kangaroo Found in Drug Store”
  • “Mom Revives Blind Pet Chicken”
  • “Theif Nabs 384 Pounds of Meat”
  • “Hunter Shoots Man on Toilet”

dog7.  I got a lot of feedback on my last post wondering how exactly am I politically incorrect.  I’ll let one out of the bag. I admit I find the pictures of Christ found in nature fascinating.  The one on the dog’s butt is just ingenious.  And speaking of Christ humor, have you seen the poster of the kids in the museum next to the painting of Christ?  The tagline is “Blasphemy:  A Ticket to Hell has never been funnier.”  Google it.

Honestly,  God has got to have a sense of humor. Just look at butt chins.

(I can’t help but wonder how long the person was looking at their dog’s ass before they realize what it looked like.)

8.  Funniest Tweet recently on Twitter from Stephen Colbert, “I didn’t win a Golden Globe, but it’s an honor just to assume I must have been nominated.”

9.  Let’s me honest.  It’s not that you don’t have time to exercise, it’s that you don’t want to.  As with everything, if it’s that important, you’ll make it go right.
My best advice, “Baby steps.”  Don’t go too steep a gradient.   The next time you exercise, if you’re comfortable, take it to the next level. But find something you enjoy!!  Don’t let it be a chore.

10.  I completely felt the love when my friend stated that she loves me more than chocolate.

Colbie Caillat11.  Colbie Caillat performed two songs at a local club (W20) here in town Thursday night.  It was a showcase for new performers her father Ken Caillat (famous record producer, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney) has on his new label.  All were pretty good, but I’ll be watching for great things from Lola Delon.

12.  From my Favorite quotes file:  “Bad choices make good stories.” Ellis Vidler (Novelist)

Thanks for listening!

A Couple of Things…

1.  Some day I’m going to write a post about all the politically incorrect things about myself.  Until then, I’ll just have a Cheshire smile from time to time.

Albert Lee, Kelly Zires, Me, Jan McWorter, Robin Dodson

The legendary Albert Lee, Kelly Zires, Me, Jan McWorter, Robin Dodson

Albert Lee and Me2. I was planning on attending a fundraiser recently, but the day before I learned that “hands-on-help” was needed. All the hard work had been done previously with the booking of bands and gathering of raffle and silent auction items, so it was a no brainer to help organize and man the door taking donations.  Over $10,000 was raised.  The headliner was the legendary Albert Lee, but over a dozen amazing musicians (including Curtis Salgado and Sugaray Rayford) showed up to help raise funds.  I love this town!!!  And I love being able to help good friends.  See full story:  Benefit for Jacob

3.  How cool would it be if schools taught these abilities?

  • Accountability
  • Reliability
  • Responsibility

4.  Sammy is softly snoring, taking one of her many naps.  Life is good.

5.  I gained 5 pounds over the holidays and I swear, my running shoes are even tighter!

6.  I’ve heard that people take the way the toilet paper should be placed on the dispenser too seriously.  Over, under, whatever!!  Let’s talk about leaving the toilet seat up. Now that’s a discussion!

7.  I don’t do drama.  Well, the truth is, I don’t do drama well.  So when there’s drama, I end up looking like a bitch because I don’t engage in it.

My Shiny Red Shoes8.  12 Shocking Sex Facts seen on Time Magazine website written by Eliana.  I wasn’t so shocked about any of them until I came across this fun fact:   “Wearing high heels can negatively affect a woman’s orgasm.”  I KNEW IT!!! (I now have a justification for rarely wearing them)  But my favorite was:   “Being well hydrated leads to better orgasms.”   Great!  Now I get to feel self-conscious for drinking so much water!

9a.  The problem with being far sighted is that it’s a bitch to find your reading glasses…unless they’re across the room.

9b.  When asking where my glasses are, by daughter’s standard answer (without even looking up), “Are they on your head?”
Unfortunately, more times than not, they are.  (Case in point, see photo at top of page).

10.  One of the best pieces of relationship advice I’ve heard, “Make sure you’re the crazy one.”

Ventura Pirates Basketball11.  I can’t believe I haven’t been out to catch a Pirate’s basketball game yet this season.  Both men and women’s Ventura College teams are known to be kick ass.  I have it on my calendar for this week.  If I play my cards right I can catch both games.  Can’t wait!

12. I love people with good manners.

13. Sydney’s visit over Christmas has been added to my list of my life’s favorite moments.  We had so much fun running around, visiting some relatives, hanging out, going out for lunch.  Our week-long visit ended too quickly.  I miss her, and cherish these moments.
Thank you baby!
